What do you do about mildew stains?

I found a doll in the basement today whose clothes are covered in mildew stains.
I had water damage in the basement a few years ago. Luckily, the stuffed animals and Barbie clothes weren’t affected.

I hope you can see it. The problem is that the outfit is a traditional costume.

Mold stains are tricky. Soaking the fabric in buttermilk overnight and then washing it as usual should help. There are also special stain removers, but they might damage the fabric. I’d just try it with buttermilk first.

I had a light-colored curtain with mildew stains and had good results using a mildew remover, even though the label said not to use it on fabric. But I figured that with those stains, I’d have to throw the curtain away anyway. So I gave it a try, and it worked great—all the stains came out. I’d be careful with delicate fabrics, though.

I’d be interested to know whether you managed to get the mildew stains out with buttermilk.
I actually have another idea
Hang the traditional outfit in direct sunlight for 2 days. That worked with my baby clothes too—cherry stains and tomato sauce stains simply disappeared afterwards.
