Walk or loden is usually made from sheep’s wool. Loden is very often used in the mountains or in regions where it can get very cold. Loden has a quality that shouldn’t be underestimated: it’s waterproof—or at least water-repellent—if it hasn’t been woven too tightly or treated. I love my loden coat, especially during the cold, wet season. Loden is woven and then undergoes a special treatment, which involves processing it with warm water and steam so that the fabric can become denser. This treatment is also called fulling, usually done with soapy water. These days, there’s even what’s called “summer loden,” which is lighter and not as densely woven or treated, but I still find it too warm for our latitudes. At least that’s how I feel. Loden, or “walk,” has another quality that shouldn’t be overlooked: it’s breathable because it’s a natural fiber, and it keeps you wonderfully warm without making you sweat in your own juices ;-) :-)—a problem many modern synthetic fibers unfortunately tend to have.
