Crocheting double crochet—where do I start?

Hi, I only know how to knit and would like to learn how to crochet. Where do I start?

Hey... if you can knit, you’re almost a crocheter already.

You teach kids to crochet by first having them make a long row of chain stitches.

This helps them get a feel for working fluidly with the hook—not pulling too tight (otherwise the hook won’t go through the stitch) but also not making the stitches too loose.

The trick with double crochet is to make one or more yarn overs before inserting the hook through the stitch.
After inserting the hook and pulling up the yarn, you always pull through two loops at a time until only one loop remains, and then you start again with a yarn over—one or more—and then insert the hook again and work it off. Of course, you’ll need to increase the number of turning chains each time so the height is right again.

If you’ve never crocheted before, you usually start with chain stitches, single crochet, and turning chains.
And only once you’ve got those down should you move on to double crochet and more complicated things.
