Durable, long-lasting socks made of felt?

Sunday, October 4, 2015 at 5:57 PM
Hi everyone,

what’s the best material to use for making socks that will last for several years? Would felt be a good option?

Best regards, Melanie

Hi Melanie,
if you make sure to have some yarn left over after knitting the socks, you can mend any holes in the socks with a darning egg and the leftover yarn. Alternatively, you could, of course, knit the socks one size larger and then felt them in the washing machine. At least, that’s what I’ve picked up here on the forum when it comes to knitting and felting socks. But I assume the pros have more to say on the subject.

Hello Melanie,
Basically, the question is whether you want to walk around in just the socks or wear shoes/slippers.
If you walk in socks or slippers without a sole, the sole rubs over time and holes form.
If you wear socks with shoes, they last longer.
If you take handmade slippers and sew on a sole (there are ready-made hut-shoe soles or sole material for cutting to size and sewing on), as I recommend in my patterns, then the slippers last relatively long!
Felted shoes are also a bit more robust. I wear the felted slippers I designed myself, and with a sewn-on sole they haven’t shown any signs of wear so far, even though they are washed regularly.
If you still need tips on felted knitting/crochet, you can also find an article about it on my blog:

Hi Karin,

I want socks to wear around the house. Most socks wear out after a few weeks or months, often on the soles and heels. That’s why I definitely want to make my next pair of socks durable and reinforce them somehow.

Thank you so much for your tips and the blog link.

Best, Melanie

P.S. What other options are there? Of course, they should also be breathable :-).
