I think as long as you’re not taking part in a crafting marathon, it’s pretty unimportant :D
What matters more is working neatly with even stitches. I think it’s similar with sewing and crafts too—crooked seams and uneven cuts or fold seams don’t make the piece look any nicer.
Crafting is supposed to be relaxing; we’re not exactly in a hurry here :)
Oh, when it comes to sewing, I’m often pretty quick, but that’s because of my training as a women’s clothing tailor—you’re trained to work fast, and that’s still in me today. I’ve slowed down a lot since then, though, and I don’t sew a whole outfit in a single day anymore; now I might even take my time over the course of a week.
When it comes to knitting, for me the journey is the destination—it’ll be finished eventually, since I usually knit in the evening while watching TV.
Of course, I want to finish my projects quickly, because the next ball of yarn and the next idea are already knocking at the door, waiting to be started. But that’s the only reason I want to work quickly.
I can’t let a single mistake slip in. No matter how far along I am, if I spot one, I’ll rip it out.
My grandma always said, “Fast and sloppy go hand in hand.” So: Good things take time. I’m more of a slow worker.
I think I’ve gotten really fast at crocheting by now. But when it comes to finishing up—and especially when it’s time to sew things together—I tend to start on the next project (so I can just go back to crocheting), and that’s how I end up with a bunch of UFOs lying around. Then, at some point, I get the urge and finish a whole bunch of them in one go. So, basically, I’m fast, but somehow it still takes a long time before something is actually finished :)
Since I’ve been knitting and crocheting for almost 50 years, I’ve gotten pretty fast.
When I really enjoy a project, I naturally stick with it and usually finish it quickly.
With patterns or pieces I don’t like as much, it takes me longer. I’ve often started various projects, and unfortunately, some of them have become UFOs.
It depends on the technique, whether I’m enjoying it, how much time I have, and how complicated the pattern is. Crocheting goes a bit faster than knitting; complicated patterns take a while, simple ones go quickly, and if something gets a little boring, that takes a while too. But overall, the whole thing is supposed to be fun—and it still is, a little more every day.
