Knitted socks "Ribs and Stairs"

This sock pattern was especially designed to show off the colors of hand painted sock yarn. If you don’t have one, don’t fear, it will work in a solid color as well.

The socks are worked top-cuff-down in a slip stitch pattern, using fingering weight yarn. They are basically ribbed socks, the strands showing up on the front side remind of stairs. Due to the characteristics of the pattern which uses a lot of yarn there is no large size, as that would use more than 1 skein of yarn. However, it can easily be adapted for a larger size as well.

The pattern is written for the use of DPNs. A chart for the stitch pattern is included.

Difficulty level: intermediate (slipped stitches, working in the round on DPNs, cuff-down sock construction)

Yarn: Opal Handpainted (75% wool, 25% nylon; 425m/100g; 465yds/3.53oz), 1 skein. Sample in size medium used 382m (418yds).

Needles: 2.5mm (US 1 1/2) set of 5 DPNs

Gauge: 24sts/50 rows in stitch pattern = 10cm/4in

Sizes: adult small and medium. Stretches to 28 (34)cm – 11 1/4 (13 3/4)in leg circumference.
