Crocheting Bookmarks

Blog-Inhaltsbild für 'Free Crochet Pattern for a Simple Bookmark'

Anyone who loves reading books knows the problem: sooner or later it's time to take a break. But how do you remember the exact spot where the story was at its most exciting?

Of course, you could simply remember the page number. A good idea—at least until everyday life gets in the way. Between grocery shopping, laundry, work, and the famous "I'll do it later," that number can disappear faster than the villain in a crime novel.

Some people simply place the book face down on the table with the page open. It works, but the book's spine usually has a different opinion. Others fold down the corner of the page to make a dog-ear. I even know someone who does this without a second thought. Personally, it makes me cringe every time. I prefer my books without creases and in a condition that still makes them look almost new, even after reading them a second or third time.

A former colleague of mine had a particularly lovely solution. He used admission tickets, movie stubs, or other small keepsakes as bookmarks and often left them inside the book. Years later, when he picked up the same book again, these little treasures would fall out and remind him of happy memories. I think that's a wonderful idea. In that way, not only does the book tell a story, but the bookmark does as well.

In an interview, a well-known German actor who described himself as an avid reader was once asked whether he used bookmarks. I found his answer as surprising as it was amusing: he didn't need one at all. When he wanted to continue reading, he would simply find the place again. And if what he reread didn't seem familiar, he probably hadn't understood it properly in the first place. In that case, reading those pages again wouldn't do any harm. Admittedly, that's a luxury you may not want to rely on with every 800-page novel.

As for me, I definitely belong to the bookmark camp. They're practical, they protect your books, and they can be beautiful, too. I especially love handmade bookmarks. They're quick to crochet and make wonderful little gifts for book lovers, family members, friends, or teachers. Every time you open your book, a small piece of handmade craftsmanship is waiting there to hold your place.

That's why I've prepared a free crochet pattern for a delicate bookmark for you today. With just a small amount of yarn, a crochet hook, and a little time, you can create a charming companion for many cozy hours of reading.

I hope you enjoy reading, crocheting along, and, of course, getting lost in your next great book.

Free Crochet Pattern for the „Lesefransen“-Bookmark

I designed this bookmark to be simple, timeless, and easy to crochet. It is worked entirely in single crochet stitches. Since it is made in the shape of a rectangle, there is no need for any increases or decreases.

To finish, decorative fringe is attached to the bottom edge, giving the bookmark a lovely, natural look.

This bookmark is a perfect project for beginners, a great way to use up leftover yarn, and a beautiful eye-catching addition between the pages of your favorite book. It also makes a thoughtful little gift for anyone who loves reading as much as you do.

Materials

  • Fine cotton yarn / for example  Yarn: Vienna by Belday Home, approximately 490 m (536 yds) per 200 g (7 oz).

  • 3 mm crochet hook

  • Scissors

  • Yarn needle for weaving in the ends

You can also use any other lightweight yarn.

Finished size: Approximately 5 cm (2 in) wide and 24 cm (9½ in) long, including the fringe.

Pattern Instructions

The "Reading Fringe" Bookmark is worked in rows.

Begin by making a foundation chain of 10 chain stitches.

Each row starts with 1 turning chain. Turn your work at the end of every row.

Row 1: Work 10 single crochet across.

Row 2: Ch 1, work 10 single crochet in the front loop only.

Row 3: Ch 1, work 10 single crochet in the front loop only.

Row 4 and all following rows: Ch 1, work 10 single crochet in the frontloop only.

Continue until you have completed 32 rows, or crochet as many rows as needed to reach your desired bookmark length.

Attaching the Fringe

Cut a strand of yarn for each fringe, making each strand twice the desired finished fringe length.

Fold a strand in half. Insert your crochet hook from the back to the front through a stitch along the bottom edge of the bookmark. Pull the folded loop through the stitch, then pull the two loose ends through the loop and tighten gently to secure the fringe.

Repeat this process, spacing the fringes evenly across the bottom edge of the bookmark. When all the fringe has been attached, trim it evenly with scissors to the desired length.
