Butterfly Wall Hangings – A Summery Crochet Pattern

Blog-Inhaltsbild für 'Butterfly Wall Hangings – A Summery Crochet Pattern'

When I think of summer, I think of sunshine, warm weather, long days, the pool, a cold drink, colourful flowers, and butterflies. Where I'm from in Switzerland, we also like to call them "summer birds", which I think suits them perfectly.

You can bring a little piece of summer into your home with this free pattern. I chose to make a blue butterfly, but of course, you can make yours in any colours you like, whether in shades of orange, pink, green, or something completely different.

I chose a blue Butterfly because it always reminds me of a special memory. A few years ago, we visited a butterfly house. My eldest son was about five years old at the time and was wearing bright blue trainers. Suddenly, a large blue butterfly flew straight towards him and landed right on his matching blue shoes. It sat there for a little while before flying away again. The whole experience impressed my son so much that he still talks about it today.

This wall hanging is crocheted using the C2C technique. The pattern focuses on the butterfly design and therefore does not include step-by-step instructions for working C2C. If you are new to this technique, you can find a helpful blog post explaining how it works here:
https://www.crazypatterns.net/de/blog/4837/how-to-work-c2c-a-beginner-s-guide-to-the-corner-to-corner-crochet-technique.

For this pattern, I briefly indicate whether it is an increase or decrease row, followed by how the row begins (6 chain stitches or 3 slip stitches and 3 chain stitches).
I then simply state the number of blocks and the colour used for that row. Therefore, basic knowledge of C2C crochet is required.

As an example for this:
Row 9: Increase: ch 6, 1 Beige, 4 Black, 1 Beige, 3 Blue (9 blocks)
This means that row 9 is an increase row. It begins with 6 chain stitches, followed by the blocks: 1 block in Beige, 4 blocks in Black, 1 block in Beige, and 3 blocks in Blue. In total, the row consists of 9 blocks.

Colour change:
Work the last double crochet until just before the end, but do not pull through the final loop yet. Yarn over with the new colour and complete the double crochet with the new colour. Always let the unused yarn fall to the back side.

Size:
With cotton DK yarn: approx. 30 x 28 cm
If a yarn with the same gauge is used
8 x 7.5 Blocks in the C2C pattern measure10 cm

Materials:
3 mm crochet hook
DK-weight cotton yarn in various colours. You will need beige for the background, black for the butterfly outline, and three shades of the same colour for the butterfly itself.
Beige: 60 g
Blue (Light Blue): 6 g
Blue (Medium Blue): 18 g
Blue (Dark Blue) 18 g
Black: 25 g

A twig for hanging up the wall hanging. For my project, I used a fairly thick twig that was approximately 40 cm (16 inches) long.

Abbreviations: (I use US Terms)
ST: Stitch
SC: Single Crochet
CH: Chain stitch
DC: Double Crochet
SS: Slip Stitch
Block: A Block always consists of the beginning Ch and the 3 Double Crochet.

Do not cut the yarn just yet, as we will use it later to attach the crochet piece to the twig.
For this, work 3 slip stitches along the edge so that the yarn is back in the corner. This places the working yarn in the right position for attaching the crochet piece to the twig later on.

To determine the length of yarn needed for attaching the crochet piece to the twig, I simply wrapped the yarn around the twig 46 times and then cut it. This gave me enough yarn to sew the entire piece onto the twig later on.

Attaching to the Twig:
Before attaching the crochet piece to the twig, I blocked it with an iron. This is my preferred way of blocking cotton projects as it is quick, easy, and works really well.

To attach the crochet piece to the twig, I used a regular sewing needle. I then simply sewed every second stitch onto the twig until the entire piece was attached.
Finally, I added the hanger. For this, I cut a piece of yarn approximately 60 cm (24 inches) long and tied a knot at each end.
