The adorable hedgehog Izzy can be crocheted using a wide variety of yarns - in all sorts of colors and sizes - allowing you to give free rein to your creativity. For instance, instead of cotton, you can crochet his body using acrylic yarn; likewise, in place of chenille, you can opt for fluffy yarn or a very thick wool.

Hedgehog, starting in dark brown (Chenille yarn, NS 4 mm):

1. Rnd:     10 ch     (10)

2. Rnd:     You will be crocheting an oval - that is, working around the chain of chain stitches. Starting from the second stitch from the hook: inc, 7 sc, 3 sc into the next stitch, then continue working along the other side of the chain: 8 sc     (20)

3. Rnd:     inc x2, 7 sc, inc x3, 7 sc, inc     (26)

4. Rnd:     (1 sc, inc) x2, 7 sc, (1 sc, inc) x3, 8 sc, inc     (32)

Color change to beige (cotton yarn, NS 2 mm):

9. Rnd:     Start of a new round: this round is crocheted exclusively into the back loops of the previous round!
In this round, the arms and legs are also crocheted in place. The arms are slightly longer and narrower than the legs. Since the spacing between the chenille stitches is quite wide, you must take care while crocheting them in not to accidentally work two stitches into a single stitch.
Crochet the first foot using 5 sc, 3 sc, crochet the second foot in with 5 sc, 2 sc, crochet the first arm in with 4 sc, 16 sc, crochet the second arm in with 4 sc, 1 sc     (40)

In this round, the ears (made of double crochet stitches) are crocheted:

10. Rnd:   23 sc, into the FLO of the next stitch: {1 hdc, 6 dc, 1 hdc}, continue normally: 6 sc, into the FLO of the next stitch: {1 hdc, 6 dc, 1 hdc}, continue normally: 9 sc     (40)

11. Rnd:    23 sc, 1 sc into the BLO of the preliminary round (behind the ear), continue normally: 6 sc, 1 sc into the BLO of the preliminary round (behind the ear), continue normally: 9 sc     (40)

12. Rnd:    40 sc     (40)

13. Rnd:    (8 sc, dec) x4     (36)

14. Rnd:    (4 sc, dec) x6     (30)

Stuff firmly with filling cotton, continuously adding more as you go.

15. Rnd:    (3 sc, dec) x6     (24)

16. Rnd:    (2 sc, dec) x6     (18)

17. Rnd:    (1 sc, dec) x6     (12)

18. Rnd:    12 sc     (12)

19. Rnd:    dec x6     (6)

Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail; thread it through a needle and pass it through the front loops of the last 6 stitches; pull tight, knot, and weave in the end.

Finalize:

Izzy the hedgehog's body is now complete. Now, the face will be embroidered. Embroider the nose using black cotton yarn, working horizontally with approximately two small stitches, placed exactly over the decreases of Round 19.

The eyes are embroidered vertically on either side of the nose in Round 15, spaced approximately 5 stitches apart and spanning a length of 2 stitches. To do this, make about 3-4 passes with the black yarn for each eye, and add a white highlight in the center.

Embroider the eyebrows between Rounds 12 and 13, spanning a length of 2 stitches above the eyes, with a spacing of 3-4 stitches between them.

If you like, you can add a couple of rosy cheeks to your Izzy on Round 14, just below the eyes (with 2 repetitions).

Using a strand of the chenille yarn you used for the hedgehog's back, you can now embroider a sort of fringe between the ears. To do this, choose a progressively decreasing spacing between the stitches over a span of 3 rounds (Rounds 9–11) - for example: 5 stitches, 3 stitches, 1 stitch.

Cut the yarn, pull it through the last loop to fasten off, tighten, and tie it securely to the starting tail before weaving in the ends.
