With this pattern, you can knit this adorable Robin comforter blanket, perfect as a thoughtful handmade gift or a sweet little companion for cuddles and comfort.
The robin has a very special meaning in Ireland. Here, there is a well-known saying:
“When robins appear, a loved one is near.”
In Celtic mythology, these beautiful birds are believed to be messengers between the world of the living and the afterlife. From this belief came the legend that a robin symbolizes the soul of a loved one who has passed away and continues to watch over those they cared for.
I live in a bungalow where my kitchen opens directly into the garden. Almost every day, I sit there with a warm cup of tea and watch these clever little birds carefully sneak into my chicken enclosure. There, they pick up the tiny seeds my chickens have left behind for them.
It is always fascinating to watch how brave, curious, and full of personality these little robins are. These small everyday moments and peaceful garden visits are exactly what inspired me to create this sweet comforter blanket.
Sizes:
Lovey Part: approximately 35 cm in diameter
Bird: approximately 10 cm tall and about 20 cm in circumference
Material:
Double pointed knitting needles and circular knitting needles in 3 and 2.5 mm
60 g DK Cotton Yarn in colour A for the Lovey and approx. 25 g DK Cotton Yarn in colour B for the Bird
Some DK Cotton Yarn in Black and Red for the face, sewing needle, stuffing.
Gauge:
Gauge is not very important, as it will simply change the final size slightly.
The DK yarn I used has approximately 125 m per 50 g.
Abbreviations:
K: Knit
P: Purl
st: Stitch
YO: Yarn over
k2tog: knit 2 together
Sk2p: Slip 1 stitch, knit 2 together, pass slipped stitch over.
KFB: Knit into the front and back of the same stitch.
M1: Pick up a stitch from the bar between stitches.
How to: (important to read)
Cast on
Work a stretchy cast on or use a larger needle size so the cast on is not too tight.
Cast Off
For the blanket:
Knit 2 stitches as they appear, place them back onto the left needle and knit them together through the back loop. Then knit 1 stitch as it appears, place it back onto the left needle and knit it together through the back loop again. Repeat this process all the way around to create a stretchy cast off edge.
For the bird:
Do not cast off. Instead, thread the yarn onto a yarn needle, pull it through the remaining stitches, then pull tightly to close the opening securely
Everything is worked in stockinette stitch throughout the pattern.
Increases:
Increases for the lovey are worked from the bar between stitches through the back loop, this is written as M1. The first few rounds are worked with KFB increases, which will also be clearly stated in the pattern instructions. These increases help shape the blanket and create the rounded form of the lovey.
The increases for the robin are worked using KFB: The stitch is doubled by knitting into the front of the stitch, leaving it on the needle, and then knitting into the back of the same stitch.
Swiss Darning
Insert the needle at the bottom of the “V” into the beginning of the stitch and pull the yarn upwards along the side. Then pass underneath the stitch above and bring the needle back out on the other side. Afterwards, return to the beginning of the stitch so the shape of the knitted stitch is recreated. Repeat this process for each stitch that should be worked.
I have included several photos to help show step by step how the pattern should be stitched and how the stitches are worked using Swiss Darning. This technique allows you to carefully embroider details onto the knitted fabric while keeping the natural knitted appearance of the stitches.

Stuffing Tip
To prevent the stuffing from showing through the stitches later, I often use a small piece of fabric sized to fit the area being stuffed, or a nylon stocking. I place this inside the knitted piece and then fill it with stuffing. This helps keep the stuffing in place, creates a smoother finish, and makes it less visible through the stitches.
Work the lovey in the main colour.

Now sew the bird onto the centre of the blanket. Make sure it is sewn on securely all the way around, so nothing can come loose or shift later on during use or cuddling.
