Crochet a friendly Halloween ghost – with LED light 👻

Mittwoch, 8. Oktober 2025

Halloween is just around the corner — and lately, my children have been saying they’re scared of ghosts. So I thought: why not show that ghosts can also be friendly, cute, and even glowing? 🕯️✨

That’s how this little crochet ghost was born — ideal for a windowsill or a stair step. With a built-in LED tealight, it glows softly and brings a cozy Halloween feeling into your home — without any spooks.

In this blog post, I’ll show you how to crochet the ghost yourself, which materials work best, and how to display it. I’ll also share a few tips for involving your children in a playful way.

🧶 What you’ll need & crochet basics

We’ll use the following stitches:

  • Chain (ch): Yarn over and pull through the loop.

  • Slip stitch (sl st): Insert into a stitch, pull yarn through, then pull through the loop on the hook.

  • Single crochet (sc): Insert into stitch, pull yarn through (2 loops on hook), pull yarn through both loops.

  • Double crochet (dc): Yarn over, insert into stitch, pull yarn through (3 loops on hook), pull through first 2 loops, then through last 2 loops.

  • Half double crochet (hdc): Yarn over, insert, pull through (3 loops), pull through all 3 loops.

  • Treble crochet (tr): Yarn over twice, insert, pull through first 2 loops (3 loops remain), pull through next 2, then through last 2.

  • Double treble (dtr): Yarn over three times, insert, pull through in sets of two loops until one loop remains.

Material list

(These are example items — feel free to use equivalents.)

  • White cotton yarn (lightweight, not too tight)

  • Crochet hook, e.g. 3.5 mm ergonomic hook

  • Stuffing fiberfill (optional but helpful)

  • LED tealight (battery-powered, flicker-free, child-safe)

  • Tapestry (darning) needle & scissors

  • Black yarn scraps or small safety eyes for the face

💡 Tip: Crochet a bit loosely so the LED light can shine through the stitches.

Little Ghost pattern

Work in continuous rounds (spiral) unless otherwise noted. A stitch marker helps.

Body

  1. Start with a magic ring, crochet 6 single crochet into it.

  2. Round 2: increase every stitch → 12 single crochet

  3. Round 3: increase every 2nd stitch → 18 single crochet

  4. Round 4: increase every 3rd stitch → 24 single crochet

  5. Round 5: increase every 4th stitch → 30 single crochetBlog-Inhaltsbild für 'Crochet a friendly Halloween ghost – with LED light 👻'

  6. Round 6: increase every 5th stitch → 36 single crochetBlog-Inhaltsbild für 'Crochet a friendly Halloween ghost – with LED light 👻'Blog-Inhaltsbild für 'Crochet a friendly Halloween ghost – with LED light 👻'Blog-Inhaltsbild für 'Crochet a friendly Halloween ghost – with LED light 👻'

  7. Rounds 7–16: 36 single crochet each roundBlog-Inhaltsbild für 'Crochet a friendly Halloween ghost – with LED light 👻'

This builds a smooth, rounded body that will sit well over the LED.

Wavy “ghost edge”

  1. Round 17: Work the wavy edge, only inserting into the back loops and doing increases so the ghost can stand.
    Pattern: [1 Single crochet, 2 Single crochet, 1 Single crochet, 2 dc] × 6, then 1 dc, 2 dtr, 1 tr, 2 dtr, 1 dc, 2 Single crochet

From here, you’ll switch to back-and-forth rows so that the longer “tail” can drape over a windowsill or stair:

  • Row 1: ch 1 (turning chain), sl st ×3, 2 Single crochet, 1 dc, 2 Single crochet, 1 sl st

  • Row 2: ch 1, sl st ×2, 3 Single crochet, 4 sl st

Once you’re back level with the rest of the ghost, return to working in spiral rounds with decreases until you reach 18 stitches. In the first decrease round, work into the remaining loop of each stitch.

Finish off, cut and weave in the yarn.

Now your ghost can either perch on its own, or you can stuff lightly and insert the LED tealight.

Stick or embroider two friendly eyes and a happy mouth so your ghost is anything but scary.

Arms (make 2)

Blog-Inhaltsbild für 'Crochet a friendly Halloween ghost – with LED light 👻'

  1. Round 1: ch 2, 5 single crochet in the 2nd chain from hook (5 sc)

  2. Round 2: increase each stitch → 10 single crochet

  3. Round 3: 10 single crochet

  4. Round 4: sc in stitches 4 & 5 together → 8 Single crochet
    5–6. Rounds 5–6: 8 Single crochetBlog-Inhaltsbild für 'Crochet a friendly Halloween ghost – with LED light 👻'

Fasten off, leave a long tail, and sew the arms to the body. If you angle them slightly, it looks like your ghost is holding something — perfect for a tiny book.

Little book accessory 📖

To give your ghost more character, you can crochet a little book to tuck into its arms.

Inner pages (make 2)

Blog-Inhaltsbild für 'Crochet a friendly Halloween ghost – with LED light 👻'

  • ch 5, from the 2nd chain: 4 Single crochet, ch 1, turn

  • Then 7 more rows of 4 Single crochet each

Cover

  • ch 7, from 2nd chain: 6 Single crochet, ch 1, turn

  • Then 9 more rows of 6 Single crochet each

The cover should be a bit larger than the pages. Place the pages centered on the cover and sew them together along the spine, leaving the other sides slightly loose so the book can open. Tuck it into the ghost’s arms and tack it in place.

Decor ideas & display

  • On a windowsill: Place one or more ghosts in varying sizes side by side

  • On stairs: Let a glowing ghost greet people on each step

  • In a seasonal corner: Combine with pumpkins, leaves, or little garlands

  • In a child’s room: Thanks to its friendly face, this ghost even works as an October night light

Bonus: Mini spiderweb 🕸️

Want a fun extra? Crochet a little spiderweb to go along with your ghost. It’s quick to make and pairs beautifully without being scary.

Materials

  • Black (or contrast color) yarn

  • Crochet hook to match

  • Darning needle & scissors

Pattern:

  1. Round 1: ch 6, join with sl st. Then repeat 9 times[ch 3, sl st] around to make arcs.

  2. Round 2: [ch 4, dc in previous round’s dc] × 9

  3. Round 3: [ch 6, dc in previous dc] × 9Blog-Inhaltsbild für 'Crochet a friendly Halloween ghost – with LED light 👻'

  4. Round 4: [ch 9, dc in previous round’s dc] × 9

  5. Round 5: [ch 11, dc in previous dc] × 9Blog-Inhaltsbild für 'Crochet a friendly Halloween ghost – with LED light 👻'

  6. Round 6: [ch 13, extended dc in previous dc] × 9

  7. Round 7: [ch 15, extended dc in previous dc] × 9Blog-Inhaltsbild für 'Crochet a friendly Halloween ghost – with LED light 👻'

Fasten off, leave a tail. Use as applique on baskets or garlands, or tape it to a window.

Family-friendly tips & ideas

Kids love helping choose yarn colors or “turn on” the ghost’s LED light. It can become a little family ritual, making Halloween a positive experience.

If any of your children are afraid of ghosts, try making them a pastel or rainbow ghost — pink, teal, or multicolor — and the spooky connotation vanishes.
