Crochet Sunflower: A Summer Amigurumi Tutorial

Mittwoch, 8. Oktober 2025

Introduction

August is in full bloom—and with it the magnificent sunflower! It’s a symbol of summer, joy, and warmth. No wonder it brightens so many hearts and gardens this time of year. This crocheted sunflower brings summer right into your living room—no watering required!

In this pattern, I’ll show you step by step how to crochet a cheerful sunflower that looks lovely as table decor, on a windowsill, or as a gift. The sunflower stands in a small flower pot, has a sturdy stem, green leaves, and a large, radiant blossom with bold petals—an absolute highlight for any crochet fan!

Tip: You can also make the sunflower without the pot and simply place the stem (with skewer inside) into a real planter—e.g., among herbs on the windowsill or in a planted balcony box. A cheerful, long-lasting decoration nestled between your real plants!

Materials

  • Cotton yarn in:

    • Dark brown (flower center)

    • Yellow (petals)

    • Green (stem and leaves)

    • Terracotta or light brown (flower pot)

    • Beige / light green for “soil”

  • Hook: 3 mm (or size to match your yarn)

  • Fiberfill

  • Pipe cleaner or sturdy wire (for the stem), wooden skewer

  • Stitch marker

  • Scissors, yarn needle

Size

Finished height (depends on yarn and stuffing): about 21 cm
Bloom diameter: about 10 cm

Stitches & Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • MR = magic ring

  • ch = chain

  • sl st = slip stitch

  • sc = single crochet

  • hdc = half double crochet

  • dc = double crochet

  • tr = treble crochet

  • st(s) = stitch(es)

  • inc = increase (2 sc in same st unless noted)

  • dec = decrease

Notes:

  • Unless otherwise stated, all parts are worked in continuous (spiral) rounds—even when the instructions say something like “3 rounds sc.”

  • Numbers at the start of each line indicate the round/row. The number in parentheses at the end of a line shows the stitch count at the end of that round/row.

Yarn & Hook Tip:
If you crochet loosely, try a smaller hook so the fabric stays firm—especially for the flower center and the pot so the stuffing doesn’t peek through. Swatch quickly to make sure you like the yarn–hook combo.

Assembly

Prep the petals: On each petal, bring both the starting and ending tails to the same side (weave one tail through the petal’s center to the other side).

Attach petals to the center: Distribute the 16 petals evenly around the edge of the flower center and pin in place. They should overlap the center by about 1 cm.

To attach, thread a sturdy needle: insert through a stitch of the brown center, then knot to the other (yellow) tail of the petal. Repeat for all petals.

Add the calyx/base: Place the green calyx piece over the back and sew it on. Sew through the last round of sc (not the decorative calyx points) into the flower center. The yellow petals should be sandwiched and secured by this seam.

Insert and secure the stem: Wrap a pipe cleaner around a skewer or use firm wire; slide into the crocheted stem for stability. Stitch the top of the stem to the back of the flower securely.
