Angel & Demon Hearts

Materials:
- Yarn of your choice (acrylic or cotton). Colours: red, white, black, yellow.
The size of the hearts is 7 cm × 4 cm.
I used cotton yarn, 425 m/100 g.
- A crochet hook, I have 1,25 mm crochet hook
- Hollow fibre for stuffing
- A piece of wire approx.  25cm long
- For eyes: a small amount of white yarn, 4 half-beads, I used 6mm diam half-beads
- Transparent glue
- A sewing needle, matching sewing threads
- Black colour embroidery yarn/thread
Abbreviations:
ch – chain
sl st – slip stitch
sc – single crochet
hdc – half double crochet
inc – increase (2 sc in 1 st)
2 inc – 2 increases in sequence
dec – decrease (single crochet two stitches together)
(...) x N times – repeat instructions in brackets N times

Angel heart (make 2)
Work with red colour yarn.
1) In a Magic Ring: 7 sc, 1 sl st (8)
2) 1 sc, inc, 1 sc, in 1 loop: 1 sc, 1 hdc, 1 sc, continue: 1 sc, inc, 1 sc, (leave the last stitch unworked), turn (11)

Continue in rows: 
3) 1 ch, 1 sc, 2 inc, 2 sc, in 1 loop: 1 sc, 1 hdc, 1 sc, continue: 2 sc, 2 inc, 1 sc, turn (17)
4) 1 ch, skip 1 loop, (1 sc, inc)× 2 times, 3 sc, in 1 loop: 1 sc, 1 hdc, 1 sc, continue: 3 sc, (inc, 1 sc)× 2 times, 1 sc, turn (22)

5) 1 ch, skip 1 loop, 1 sc, inc, 3 sc, inc, 4 sc, in 1 loop: 1 sc, 1 hdc, 1 sc, continue: 4 sc, inc, 3 sc, inc, 1 sl st, turn (27)

Do not turn! Make 11 sc from A to B.  

Fasten and cut off thread of Part 1, do not cut thread of Part 2. 

Join both parts together. 
8) work 46 sc hooking through both parts. Stuff lightly as you go.

 
Demon Heart (make 2)
Work with red colour yarn.
1  - 5 same as the Angel Heart.
6) 1 ch, skip 1 loop, 2 sc, inc, 3 sc, inc, 5 sc, in 1 loop: 1 sc, 1 hdc - put a marker here - point О, 1 sc, continue: 5 sc, inc, 3 sc, inc, 2 sc, 1 sl st, turn (32)
7) 1 ch, skip 1 loop, 1 sc, inc, 3 sc, inc, 9 sc,
change to black colour yarn: 1 sc in point О,

11 ch, from 2nd ch from hook: 1 sl st, 9 sc, 1 sc in point О,
change to red yarn: 9 sc, inc, 3 sc, inc, 1 sc (46)

Do not turn! Make 11 sc from A to B.  Fasten and cut off thread of Part 1, do not cut thread of Part 2. 

Join both parts together, hook through both parts as you go. 

8) work 17 sc with red colour yarn, 

change to black colour yarn, work along the first side of the tail: 9 sc, 4 ch, from 2nd ch from hook: 1 sl st, 2 sc,

continue along the tail: 2 sl st,
work along the other side of the tail: 2 sl st, 4 ch, from 2nd ch from hook: 1 sl st, 2 sc.
Continue along the tail: 9 sc, insert a piece of wire, 

change to red colour yarn: 28 sc.
Stuff lightly as you go. 
Fasten off, cut off.

Wings (make 2)
Make white wings for the angel and black wings for the demon. 
Ch 7 
1) starting from 3rd ch from hook: 2 hdc, 2 sc, 1 sl st, 1 ch, turn (5)

2) 1 sl st, 1 sc, inc, 1 sc, (leave the last stitch unworked), 3 ch, turn (5)

3) from 3rd ch from hook: 2 hdc, 1 sc, inc, 1 sc, 1 sl st, 1 ch, turn (7)
4) 1 sl st, 2 sc, inc, 2 sc, (leave the last stitch unworked), 4 ch, turn (7)
5) from 3rd ch from hook: 2 hdc, 3 sc, inc, 2 sc, 1 sl st, 1 ch, turn (10)
6) 1 sl st, 2 sc, 2 inc, 3 sc, (leave the last 2 stitches unworked), 4 ch, turn (10)
7) from 3rd ch from hook: 2 hdc, 4 sc, 2 inc, 2 sc, 2 sl st (14)

Fasten off, cut off.
Take the ends of the threads and make two knots. Fasten off, cut off.

Sew the wings on.  

Eyes
Work with white colour yarn.
4 ch
1) starting from 2nd ch from hook: inc, 1 sc, inc, ch, turn (5)
2) inc, 3 sc, inc, ch, turn (7)
3) inc, 5 sc, inc, ch, turn (9)
4) 9 sc, ch, turn (9)
5) dec, 5 sc, dec, ch, turn (7)
6) dec, 3 sc, dec (5)
Do not turn! Work sc around the eye, fasten off. Cut off, bind off leaving a long end for sewing.

Sew on the eyes. Embroider around the centre and edge with black colour yarn/thread. See photo for guidance.

Glue the 2 half-beads on. Embroider a smile. 

Halo for an angel
Make a halo from a piece of wire, see photo for guidance. 

With white colour yarn ch 1. Hold the end of thread place the hook under the wire and pull the thread, make a loop and work 1sc.

Continue round the wire, make sure the stitches are tight.

Insert the halo into the heart, sew it on in points 1 & 2. 

Demon horns ( make 2)
Work with yellow colour yarn.
5 ch
1) starting from 2nd ch from hook: 1 sl st, 1 sc, 2 hdc in 1 loop, 1 hdc, 2 ch, turn (5)
2) 1 hdc, 2 hdc together, 1 sc, 1 sl st (4)
Cut off yarn, leave a tail for further operation.

Sew sides A and B. Attach the horns to the heart. Sew them on.

St Valentine’s symbols are completed! To make a brooch just attach a brooch fastener/pin, to make a key ring or a bag charm just make a loop.
