Crochet Stitches Made Easy: Treble Crochet and Double Treble Crochet

Crochet Stitches Made Easy: Treble Crochet and Double Treble Crochet

Hello my dears,

today, I’d like show you two crochet stitches that I personally love to use for more elaborate textured stitch patterns as well as the more delicate lace stitch patterns: the treble crochet and the double treble crochet – or in UK terms: the double treble crochet and the triple treble crochet.

US terms UK terms
Treble Crochet (tr) Double Treble Crochet (dtr)
Double Treble Crochet (dtr) Triple Treble Crochet (trtr, ttr)

Since both these stitches will come up a little „higher“ (or „longer“) than for example a single crochet, they allow for more varied stitch patterns with less density and more “wiggle room” between the stitches, giving them a lighter, more airy character.

Even though they are slightly more advanced stitches and, at first glance, might seem a little complicated, you’ll see that they’re much easier to work than you might think – in fact, they’re just as simple as a regular single crochet.

So let’s break it down and first look at how to do a treble crochet (or in UK terms: the double treble crochet):
In a crochet chart, the symbol for the treble crochet looks like the capital letter „T“ with two horizontal bars across it. Now, when you look closely at the crochet stitch itself, you can actually see these two horizontal bars there as well (where the red arrows are pointing to).

So, to work the treble crochet, we start by yarning over twice so that we have a total of three loops on the hook (including the starting loop).

Then we insert the hook at the desired spot – in this case, simply the next free stitch in the row – yarn over once more and pull the yarn through. Now we have four loops on the hook.

Now yarn over and pull the yarn through the first two loops only. Leave the remaining two loops untouched. You’ll end up with three loops on the hook.

Yarn over once more and, again, pull your yarn through the first two loops only. Leave the remaining loop untouched. You now have two loops on your hook.

And finally, yarn over a third time and pull your yarn through both remaining loops on your hook.

Now, with only one loop left on your hook, you have successfully completed your first treble crochet. Congratulations :-)

To work a double treble crochet (or in UK terms: a triple treble crochet), we’re going to use the same logic as we did for the treble crochet.
When we look at the crochet chart symbol again, it looks very similar to the symbol for the treble crochet, the capital letter „T“, only this time with three horizontal bars across instead of two.

That means, we’re going to start by yarning over three times – giving us a total of four loops on the hook.

Then we insert the hook at the desired spot – again, here, this simply means the next free stitch in the row – yarn over and pull through so that we now have a total of five loops on the hook.

Then we yarn over and pull the yarn through the first two loops only, leaving the remaining three loops untouched. That’ll leave us with four loops on the hook.

Now yarn over again and pull the yarn through the first two loops only, leaving the remaining two loops untouched. You now have three loops on the hook.

Repeat by yarning over once more and then pulling the yarn through the first two loops only, again leaving the last loop untouched.

You now only have two remaining loops on your hook. So yarn over one last time and pull your yarn through both remaining loops.

In the end, you have only one loop on your hook again which means you have successfully completed the double treble crochet. Congratulations :-)
