You use the decrease of double crochet not only to decrease the amount of stitches in the row but also as part of the pattern. Often it is used when you crochet clothes or scarfs.
Decrease works as below:
Yarn over needle and go into the next stitch.
Get yarn over needle.
Now you have three loops on the hook.
Get yarn over and pull it through two loops.
Now you have two loops on the hook.
Get again the yarn over hook,
Go with the hook into the next stitch and get the yarn over.
Now you have four loops on the hook.
Get again yarn over and pull it through two loops.
Now you have three loops on the hook.
Yarn over and pull it through three loops.
