Knitting with 5 needles

Hey everyone,
this is probably a silly question, but I’m asking anyway. When I try to knit with 5 needles, I just can’t seem to knit the transition between the needles without a “hole.” Am I knitting too loosely? Or why is there always a gap? Or do you know a trick? I’d really love to try knitting socks. The heel isn’t a problem—I get that part. But I just can’t get the leg section right. Does anyone know what to do? Thanks!

You have to pull the first and last stitch on each needle really tight. That takes some practice.
Have you tried the Crasy Trio needles? A lot of people who have trouble with a set of double-pointed needles get along much better with those.

Or you could knit with two circular needles. There are books on that.
I can’t get the hang of a set of double-pointed needles either.

Or you could knit in a staggered pattern: After you’ve finished knitting one needle, use the same right needle to knit 2–3 more stitches from the next left needle.

It could also be the yarn — are you using proper sock yarn?
I used to have trouble knitting sock yarn with a cotton blend
evenly, but tightening the first stitch always helped me.
It’s a bit tedious, unfortunately, but over time you won’t get holes anymore. Have fun knitting socks!

Thanks for your comments. I’m already using the right yarn. I think I really am knitting too loosely. So I’m going to try Inna’s tip and knit over the “loose spots.” After all, it doesn’t say anywhere that you always have to knit the stitches the same way. The main thing is that the pattern turns out right. I’ll just give it a try tomorrow morning. Thank you so much!

Hi Uschi,

I had the same problem, which is why I never really liked knitting socks.
Ever since I started using the Crasy Trio, the problem has been solved. ;-)

Yes, you also need to pull the stitches tighter at the joins. I’ve tried shifting the stitches every now and then too, but personally I find that too fiddly.

What also helps me is using relatively thin needles.

With a little practice, you’ll definitely get the hang of it.

Best regards
Monika

I also use CraSy Trios; I don’t have a problem because I knit very tightly. But others probably still do. Try searching for Sylvie Rasch’s video about “ladders” and “gaps.” In it, she explains which stitch opens up where and how, and how you can prevent that by adjusting the position of the needle.
