Hi Meli, the smallest I’ve seen was 0.6. There might be even smaller ones. I’m just wondering—what kind of yarn do you use for that size?

I think you use thread for filet crochet. As far as I know, it’s available in various sizes,
though you’ll likely find it in specialty stores. It’s thin but sturdy.
You can also use this thread as a carry-along thread if you want to incorporate beads or other decorative elements. So you crochet as usual with the appropriate yarn and matching hook, and at the right spot, you add the fine thread—which has a bead or other decorative element threaded onto it—to your work. You then crochet that section with two strands, which is a handy way to create delicate details.
With a very thin hook, though, you won’t get very far when it comes to decorative projects.

I don’t think there are any crochet hooks much smaller than 0.6. At some point, it just doesn’t make sense anymore, and the hook would break. Even with that size, it’s easy to injure your fingers. When crocheting, you have to be careful not to pierce your own skin when pulling the yarn through.

In the past (and still to some extent today, e.g. in Turkey), people used such fine crochet hooks to crochet handkerchief lace and lace edging on headscarves; the yarn is about as thick as heavy-duty sewing thread.

Would that also work with Sternzwirn?

How do you protect your fingers when crocheting with a small hook? Best regards, Karo.

Well,
a thimble does protect the tip of your finger from needle pricks,
but I think you’d slip off the crochet work because you can’t really grip it properly anymore.
It’s tricky.

Hi Melli and everyone else who’s interested—

there are even much thinner crochet hooks.
I have sizes 0.35, 0.4, 0.5, ...
They’re available from Tulip and Clover, with and without handles!

Best regards, Brigitte

You can still find handkerchiefs with holes for crocheting lace onto them today, and yarn sizes 60 or 80 are also available; I even have some old patterns lying around somewhere. The lace looks absolutely beautiful. However, I’m not a crocheter, and it’s always seemed much too delicate to me.
Sternzwirn yarn is too stiff for this kind of work.
