Ponchos

Hello, my question is this: Are ponchos popular right now? Do people wear them these days? I wanted to crochet a poncho for myself and one for my daughter and create patterns at the same time, but I’m not sure if anyone actually wears them anymore. I’d like to know your opinion. (I’ve attached a couple of photos as examples.)

Great for the in-between seasons

Of course, ponchos are always in style. I knitted the brown-mottled one in the top picture myself—it’s awesome.
A poncho also looks great in winter over a short quilted jacket; I have one in white that goes with any poncho. Knit or crochet some matching wrist warmers to go with it… perfect

I’m also in the middle of knitting a poncho right now, but the pattern probably won’t go online until October because it still needs to be test-knitted.
Ponchos are (thankfully!) totally back in style right now—I already have three hanging in my closet (store-bought *blush* ;-)) and I love them!

I don’t quite understand the difference between a poncho and a cape. Could someone perhaps explain that to me? That would be great. Thanks

A cape is also loose-fitting and meant to be thrown on, but it has sleeves or armholes, which a poncho doesn’t have.

The woman wearing the purple poncho on the right side of the right-hand photo seems to have limited range of motion in her arms—or does it just look that way in the photo? To me, at least, it also looks as though she wouldn’t be able to reach something from the top shelf at the supermarket while wearing this poncho without ruining its perfect fit.

No, it’s not really suitable for everyday wear. It’s more of a fashion accessory. But that’s because of the stitch pattern. If it were wider, it wouldn’t drape nicely since the stitch pattern is very dense.
It’s still pretty, though ;-)

So, a nice and fashionable straitjacket, then. :-)

No man would ever wear a carpet with a neck opening, certainly not that “straitjacket.”
No offense, but that’s a women’s thing. It looks good on you—no man would ever want to swap places with you.

That’s why one photo shows a woman wrapped in a rug and the other in a straitjacket :-)

They’re nice to look at—the one on the right is a bit more elegant, and the woman wearing it is very pretty. The woman on the left is pretty, too, but her poncho isn’t quite as elegant; on the other hand, I think it looks very cozy.

Ponchos knitted with very fine yarn can also be worn under coats. I also wear them over blazers and leather jackets. They look great!

You can actually still move around when you’re wearing a poncho over a blazer and a leather jacket? Wow. Then it must not only be made of fine yarn, but also cut a bit more loosely. No, that can’t be, can it? Otherwise, it wouldn’t fit under a coat
Well, I can’t quite picture it, but it’s nice that you feel comfortable in it.
