Hello,
does anyone have any ideas on how to keep multiple balls of yarn from getting tangled up with each other when knitting?
I’m knitting with three colors and have to constantly untangle the balls because they get tangled up while I’m knitting.
I think I’ve seen some tips on this somewhere before, but I don’t remember where, nor do I know what search term to use.
I’d appreciate it if anyone had a suggestion.
Thanks and best regards
Doris
Thanks so much for the tip—should I search on Google in general or here on this site?
I haven’t been able to find anything specific yet…
but I’ll keep looking…
Thank you so much, Mowi19. I’ve now found similar tips on Pinterest—using separate containers really is the solution.
Maybe someone else is looking for information on this topic too:
for example, I’ve seen those clear McDonald’s coffee cups with a domed lid and a hole in the top—they work great too.
Two years ago, my neighbor gave me a cardboard yarn box. It had dividers for up to four balls of yarn and cutouts along the edges for the working strands. I’ve seen that these boxes are also available in wood and plastic. Unfortunately, our chubby cat got his paws on the cardboard box and destroyed it...
I’m having the same problem with untangling the yarn right now. However, I’m knitting with 7 skeins in vertical stripes of different colors and patterns (a doll blanket). So every time I change colors, I have to cross the strands, turn the work at the end of the row, untangle the skeins, and rearrange them. It’s a nightmare. I just don’t know how to do it without constantly untangling and rearranging them.
I arrange the balls of yarn on the table in front of me in the order I’ll need them.
On the right side row, I cross all the strands in exactly the same direction.
For the wrong side row, I turn the work in one direction underneath the strands (I basically pull the end of the row under the strands to the other side). It doesn’t matter if the strands are now crossed over each other. The balls of yarn all stay where they are.
For the wrong side row, I cross all the strands in the exact opposite direction from the right side row.
For the next right side row, I turn the work in the opposite direction from the wrong side row. Then everything is back where it was at the beginning.
You just have to think through once which way to turn and when, and stick with it—but you’ll pick it up pretty quickly.
To put them away, I thread a knitting needle through the balls so they don’t get mixed up when I’m tidying up.
