Elf Sock: How many stitches for 8-ply yarn?

Hi,

I’m currently trying my hand at the Elfensock. According to the chart for 8-ply yarn, I cast on 12 stitches per needle (48 total) and started knitting the border pattern. The number of stitches keeps decreasing, so I’m worried my foot might not fit through it anymore. Has anyone here ever knitted with yarn this thick before and can help me out?

Of course, it’s a shame that you’re having trouble with the pattern for the elf socks.
