When is it finished?

When are you finished with your work? When it’s finished crocheting, or only when it looks perfect? What I’m curious about is: how often do you have to start over from the beginning?

Best regards, Biene

Hi Bienchen....

It’s rare that I have to rip something out, but it’s done when it’s perfect :)

Or rather, when I like it just the way it is. Sometimes even little mistakes are exactly what make it perfect.

“Perfect” and “beautiful” are very subjective—and that’s a good thing :o)
But to answer your question: Yes, when I make something, I want it to be perfect in my eyes, so I’ll unravel it if necessary. Over time, I’ve gotten into the habit of placing markers every so often when working on complicated patterns or rows, or when there are a lot of stitches. That has already saved me quite a bit of unraveling.

There’s just too much time and money invested in handcrafts, and that one—maybe even just a tiny—mistake would probably catch my eye every time I looked at the finished piece.

For me, a piece isn’t finished until everything is attached and all the loose ends are woven in…
and I usually have to do that right away. Once I’ve set it aside, I really don’t like picking it up again later just to do little things like weaving in ends *brrrr*.

And yes, having to rip something out every now and then—I’m afraid that’s just part of it.
When I’m working on a new pattern, I usually don’t rip it out; I leave the first piece as it is and then make the second or third… so I can compare them later to see which one is better.

When I’m making something for myself—for example, a sampler shawl like I am right now—and there’s a mistake in the pattern, I do have to undo it. I’m like Melanie that way; the mistake would catch my eye every single time.

Best, Nici

Dear Biene,
at first I made mistakes all the time and had to unravel everything constantly. But that got better over time. Of course, I still make mistakes today. For example, due to carelessness. But eventually you get more and more practice, and your work becomes smoother.
You shouldn’t get too upset about it. You learn from your mistakes, and—as the saying goes—you grow with your challenges.

Best regards, Heakeloma

Actually, when it fits perfectly.
I’ll let small mistakes that aren’t noticeable slide once in a while.
But I’ve had to rip it out quite often—for complicated patterns, I prefer to use stitch markers.
