Is a "ball of yarn" the same as a "skein of yarn"?

Hi,

a ball of yarn looks like a ball. A skein looks like a cylinder or a tube. But they both mean the same thing. :-)

And unless otherwise specified, this usually refers to a skein or ball weighing about 50g (1.75 oz), which is sort of a standard size (at least here in Germany and in much of Europe).
