Learning to knit—how long does it take, on average?

Hi,
I know this is a silly question because it’s different for everyone. It always depends on how talented someone is and how much patience they have, but could you maybe tell me roughly how long it took you to get the hang of knitting?

I keep practicing casting on and knitting and purling, but I’ve never gotten past the first few rows. I have a circular needle, so at least I don’t lose any stitches.

Hi!

Well, it worked for me right away. I could do it back in elementary school, too, but due to a lack of interest and talent, my grandma always knitted for me :-D Then in September 2011, I got the idea to knit myself a hat—thanks to a YouTube video, of course. It worked right away, and I was hooked! Since I’m all about making things myself instead of buying them, I’m now interested in it too—and it seems I’ve actually developed some talent after all :-D

If you learn better from YouTube videos, watch how others do it; maybe that’ll help you just as much. You can find thousands of videos on Nadelspiel.com, for example.

Best regards

It goes quickly if you choose a project that promises quick results. As a beginner, you don’t want to wait long to see something take shape. A scarf made with thick yarn and large needles is a great tip for your first project. The large stitches also don’t slip off as easily (if one does happen to slip). A scarf like that can be finished in just one evening (for example, our collar scarf!).

And if you’re eager to experiment, you can incorporate a pattern of knit and purl stitches—or other new techniques—into your next project. And before you know it, you’ll be well past the beginner stage :-)

Everyone has their own pace. Just keep practicing, even with simpler projects, and you’ll get the hang of it. If knitting is for you. If not, you’re better off sticking with crocheting.
