Edge stitches

Hi everyone,
This is probably a really stupid question, but I can never get the left edge of my projects right. Many patterns say to knit the last stitch, then slip the first stitch on the wrong-side row.
The right edge of my projects always looks good, but on the left I always end up with something like huge chain stitches, no matter how tightly I pull the stitches.

Does anyone have any idea what I’m doing wrong?

Hi Babalita,

I’ve had that problem too. I always try a little workaround. Try purling the last stitch and then slipping it through the back loop. That might help a little.

another option is to purl the last stitch and knit
the first one through the back loop. That creates a fairly firm edge.

I always work the edge stitches in garter stitch—that way you get a firm edge
, and if you want to pick up stitches, e.g. for a border
, it’s super easy!

I do it like Birgit. That’s how it’s described in lots of patterns, too. Plus, the pieces sew together really well that way.

Here’s a nice, tight edge stitch:

Slip the first stitch as if to knit ,
knit the last stitch,

just give it a try,
