Foundation single crochet stitches

Hi
I always thought that when crocheting, you could only cast on stitches or make the first row with chain stitches.
But I’ve just learned that there’s another way to do it.
You make the loop right at the beginning, just like usual,
and then a chain stitch.
Then you insert the hook back through the chain stitch, make a single crochet, and keep going with single crochets until you have the desired number of stitches.

It really works. I tried it.
The first row does look a little different from a row of chain stitches, of course.
But I think it’s totally fine.
It’s definitely good if you’re planning to make a cowl, because it makes sewing it together easier.

Have you ever done this before?

I had no idea you could cast on this way. I have to go to bed now, but tomorrow I’m going to try this method of casting on. Thanks for the tip. Would you mind sending me a private message to let me know which books you use to get these tips?

it’s really good
the first row looks much better that way
you just shouldn’t do it with yarn with a mouliné effect, meaning yarn where several thin strands of different colors are twisted together.
It’s always a little tricky at first.
At least for me; pros probably have fewer problems with it.
