Anyone else feel this way?

Hi,

oh great, a “join-in” day—I’m definitely jumping right in.

My question for you:

Do you ever see a pattern and fall in love with it right
away, so you just have to buy it?
Sometimes I see patterns here that I just have
to have right away, and I usually start on them the very same day.

And then other times, I’m looking for a pattern for something that’s
been floating around in my head, and I can’t find anything that makes me go, “Wow, that’s it.”

Sometimes it’s like I’m under a spell.

How about you?

Love, Heike

Hi Heike :)

Yeah, I know exactly what you mean! Sometimes you’re in the middle of a project, then you see a pattern somewhere and think: WOW! I just HAVE to have this right now and get started immediately!
And then there’s no way around it :)

On the other hand, I know your problem too: Sometimes you want to make something, but you just can’t find anything that fits!
That’s actually how I got into writing patterns!
I was looking for a pattern for something and found only one, but it cost over 10 €. (I don’t mind spending money on things like that, but that was a bit steep!)
So I improvised and realized: Hey, I can do that too ;)

Oh yes, I know exactly what you mean. When you’re not looking for anything in particular, you always find something you like—and then you have to have it right away.

But if you need something very specific, you can search forever and still find nothing.
It was the same for me as for Tina. That’s how I got into writing patterns too.

I’m the same with stitch patterns, too. And when I see a pattern I like, I have to try it out right away. Thank goodness I always have the right yarn or a yarn cake at home for that. Maybe not in the right color, but you can always get that later....

Hi everyone,

I’ve just recently discovered crocheting for myself, though I used to knit a ton. I’ve already bought a ton of patterns because I liked the projects so much. And right now, I still have 30 on my wish list.  I have no idea when I’m ever going to get to all of them. I bought yarn right away for two of them. Unfortunately, I had to give up on the first project—it was just too complicated for a beginner like me. I’m almost done with the second one, and I’m totally happy :D
But I already have my eye on the next projects—I’ll decide which ones to do based on which yarn catches my eye ;-).

Ah, do you know that “jumping yarn” too? It jumps into your cart or onto your back and clings to you. Or, quite cheekily, it hops into your online shopping cart and begs: “Take me with you!!!!”

Who can say no to that?

There are way too many patterns that I like so much that I absolutely have to have them right away, and every now and then I start working on a project right away, even though I have lots of other projects waiting!
I’m relatively immune to “impulse yarn buys” — I usually know roughly what I want to make with it before I buy it — but all too often, I don’t have the time to actually make it, so my stash just keeps piling up.

I totally get that “just have to have it right away” feeling :-) I also thought that’s actually really smart. That way, I can take a more relaxed look at which yarn catches my eye next time and don’t have to desperately resist. Thanks to my phone, I can then immediately check which patterns the yarn goes perfectly with. If worse comes to worst, I can check my wish list and quickly buy a pattern right there *giggle* “Just in case,” I also wanted to have a good amount of store credit in my CP account. Okay, I’ve already blown through more than half of my nest egg on “must-haves”... but hey, a craft magazine easily costs 5–6 euros, and you usually only find one project in there that you actually want to make.

Hi Michaela, you’re lucky with those craft magazines—they often cost 10 francs or more here! (For example: An issue that costs 4.80 euros in Germany sells for 9.60 francs here!) My CP store credit is melting away like the glaciers in Switzerland!

I still have so many ideas in my head that want to be brought to life that I simply don’t have any time to work from other people’s patterns.

Things like sweaters would only be an option for me if they can be customized.

What doesn’t happen now or in the near future might still happen someday.

Yeah, Heike, I know exactly what you mean. There have been so many patterns here that have inspired me so much that I fell in love with them and just had to buy them.

But once I started writing my own patterns, that feeling faded. Because I just don’t get around to working through them myself.

I don’t buy magazines anymore either, ever since I discovered this platform. I love the detailed patterns here with step-by-step instructions and photos. They make it so much easier for me to work.
