Knitting dolly – how does it work?

I bought a knitting dolly ages ago.
The instructions that came with it were pretty useless.
Does anyone have easy-to-follow instructions on how to use a knitting dolly?

Hi Muetzekatze, Kerstin answered the question on Facebook: 
A knitting dolly is really simple.... Hold it in your left hand and thread the yarn through the knitting dolly from the outside to the inside, leaving about 5–10 cm hanging out at the bottom, then wrap it around every other peg until all four pegs are wrapped. Now use the needle to lift the yarn over the first peg, where you wrapped the yarn around it for the first time, and then continue with each peg in turn. Hold the yarn and the dolly together in your left hand, with the yarn wrapped around your index finger. Don’t hold it too tightly, otherwise the knitting will be too tight and difficult.....Just keep going; the stitches form by themselves as you lift the yarn over the pegs......To finish the cord, do this... put the first stitch onto the second peg, lift it off, put this stitch onto the next peg, lift it off, and so on until finished. For the last stitch, pull the yarn through at least twice and pull it tight. Done! ....Have fun

I'll try that out tomorrow and report back if I can't get it to work. My problem starts right when I first wrap the pegs. The "beginning" never holds for me. It turns into such a slippery, loose knitted bit that there's no point continuing, and then I unravel it again, get frustrated, and put the knitting spool away again. Or I make the beginning so tight that I can't get the little hook under the yarn anymore. Somehow I just can't manage to find a good middle ground there.

Should you use thicker or thinner yarns for the knitting spool? I tried it with relatively thin yarn; maybe that's the problem?
I've never even gotten as far as knitting off with the knitting spool. But one day I'll manage that too. You may have read the other thread; I'm more into weaving looms. :) But in theory, any child can use a knitting spool, so I figure I should be able to manage it someday too. I'd like to make little bands/cords that I wanted to combine with the woven pieces.

I saw your poll over on Facebook: today it is definitely too hot for me to work with yarn. I hope tomorrow will be better. Actually, I wanted to have proper spring first before summer arrives. But you have to take what you get. :)

Have you tried the knitting dolly again?

I’ve also found it a bit too warm for crocheting and knitting these past few days.
I’d rather sit under the umbrella with a pitcher of iced tea (homemade) and a good book.

I checked again:
my knitting dolly doesn’t have four hooks, but eight.
Does the same principle apply, or is there anything else I need to keep in mind?
