Crocheting an Oval

Hi everyone, does anyone have a good pattern on how to crochet an oval (it’s for a bag)? The original pattern only shows the beginning, and the rest of the steps are illustrated with a crochet diagram. Unfortunately, I can’t read or interpret it. Is every oval crocheted the same way, or does it really depend on the pattern? 

As far as I know, the beginning is always the same. You crochet a foundation chain, then start by crocheting along the top of the foundation chain and back along the underside. Depending on the pattern, you’ll need to pay attention to where the stitches are doubled or tripled. That should be specified in the pattern. After that, you continue in rounds.

The increases work the same way as for a circle... except that you only increase at the curves.
In the first round, for example, work 3 sts into 1 st on both sides, then 1x2, 1x1, 1x2 sts, then 1x2, 2x1, 1x2...
Just experiment a little to see how you can make your oval look the best (and smoothest)!

I haven’t tried it yet. I just wanted to read up on my new project. With a little practice, it should be doable—I’ve also looked at some shoes, some of which are crocheted in an oval shape. I just think finding the right stitch might be a bit trickier. Thanks—I’ll let you know how it goes when I get started.
