Hey everyone—do you have any pro tips for storing wool? What should I keep in mind?

Good morning, Sissela

I bought some simple plastic bins from IKEA. Just put the yarn inside, close the lid, and tuck them away in a corner or on a shelf.

Best wishes, Melanie

Hi Sissela,

I have a large cabinet with lots of shelves in the hallway. That’s where I store my yarn, sorted by type (cotton, sock yarn, etc.) and then by color, from light to dark. It looks fun when you look inside and is really well-organized, just like in a yarn store. But the yarn I’m using a lot right now is in baskets in the living room—much to my partner’s chagrin :-P, hehe

Best wishes, Nici

Oh, I almost forgot... don’t store it in direct sunlight. I once had some cotton yarn that faded, even though the sun only shone on the shelf for an hour a day

I’ve recently started storing my yarn in the flip-front cabinets shown above in our bedroom. This idea came to me on the spur of the moment during a visit to IKEA, since I’d always been looking for something organized and space-saving for my yarn. They’re actually shoe cabinets, which aren’t exactly cheap (unlike the plastic containers), but I think they’re brilliant and decorative.  I’ve sorted my yarn by color, and I’ve since added more boxes on the opposite wall—because you can never have enough yarn. The cabinets are only 18 cm deep, so they don’t take up too much space.
Best regards, Ingrid

IKEA seems to be a great place for yarn lovers :)

@Hamster: That’s true—there are so many different kinds of storage boxes and furniture! I got my shelves and boxes there too.
At my workspace, I have a drawer unit (stackable plastic units) — that’s where I store the yarn for my current projects. (also to my partner’s dismay ;)
Best regards,
Karin

I also keep my yarn in pretty plastic boxes with floral patterns on them. They’re not from IKEA, but they keep the cats away from the yarn too.

Hi. Under my free patterns, there’s something about yarn storage. I attached a fabric under-bed storage drawer to the wall. Best regards, Nicole

I keep most of my thin yarn in boxes too, and the thick yarn in a yellow bag, which I can see through as well.

Just out of curiosity, may I ask how many metres or skeins of yarn you usually have on hand on average?

I have various kinds of yarn here, and it all adds up to about 25 kg... I always have it on hand, though depending on the season, it can sometimes be a little more

@Karin: I’ll have to take another look at the IKEA catalog :-) Thanks for the suggestion

Dear all—thanks for the suggestions here in this thread. What about light and shade, or warmth/temperature?
@berlidesign, I didn’t know these topics were also covered directly in the patterns. I’ll take a look. Thanks.
