I have a few sweaters made of 100% cotton, which I mainly wear in the winter. I’ve never been too cold in them, not even in the dead of winter. I just find cotton very comfortable to wear—it feels good against the skin. With temperatures like we’re having now,
to be honest, I don’t wear anything knitted :-)
I think that depends a lot on personal preferences.
I find that pure cotton works very well for summer clothes, but it’s really not the easiest material to work with.
Personally, I’ve come to prefer lighter options.
In winter, it again depends on what you consider warm. I’m always cold, no matter what I wear. In winter, I always wear a long-sleeved shirt under my sweater anyway, and in that case I find pure cotton to be warm too—but the weight doesn’t bother me then.
That’s why I mentioned mercerized cotton… In my opinion, Catania isn’t suitable for warm clothing for that reason, but other cotton yarns might be, depending on how they’re processed.
But it really is always a matter of personal preference.
And the type of stitch you choose.
And whether it was knitted or crocheted.
And whether it’s a thick cotton yarn or a thinner one…
And so on and so forth ;)
In my opinion, it’s hard to compare sewn cotton items with knitted or crocheted ones. The stitch pattern is completely different—much denser... so naturally, less cold air gets through.
For crocheted or knitted winter clothes, I would always prefer virgin wool because it keeps you much warmer; for sewn items, I also always like to choose cotton, usually with a brushed inner side.
For summer items, I use a fairly thin cotton with a yardage of 150 to 170 m per 50 g. The garments are very light when knitted with it. I only use thicker, heavier cotton for the cooler season.
The baby pinafore dress I just knitted, for example, is very light and also thin. It’s good to wear in summer.
On the other hand, I can confirm that tightly knitted cotton also keeps you warm in fall and winter. A thicker yarn is probably better for that.
Those are my experiences with it, since I really like using 100% cotton.
