Largest / Smallest Ball of Yarn

Dear users and authors,
what was the largest or smallest ball of yarn you’ve ever had?

Hello and good morning!

The smallest ball of yarn was a 50-gram ball of Catania (not counting leftover yarn),
and the largest was a 700-gram ball of acrylic yarn.

Yep, I’ve had those giant Polyschaf balls several times myself. They’re perfect for things like toilet paper roll hats or garlands.

My smallest ones are my hand-spun experiments. I often spin just 10 to 20 grams, which I use for small swatches to document the results of different fibers for myself—I don’t really make anything out of them.

I received them as a gift once.



One weighs 10 grams and has 16 meters. I spent a long time wondering what they could be used for. Recently, I saw something similar at a craft store—they were little balls of cotton yarn the same size, and they were advertised as amigurumi yarn.

I have some tiny balls of sock yarn from H&H Cologne—they’re 10 g each and are supposed to be just enough to knit a pair of baby socks, but they’re just too cute for me to use ;)

And my biggest balls are also the 700-gram PolySchafe.

For me, it was a 5 g ball for crocheting handkerchief edging and a 500 g monster ball that my grandma had found somewhere. She later got a sofa cushion made from it for her birthday.

The smallest ball of yarn I ever had was 25 g.

I’m currently working with my largest one — it weighs 1,090 g.
