Fringes on a stole

Hi,
I really need some help.

How long should the fringes be for a stole that’s about 2.00 m long and 1.00 m wide and crocheted with a 3.5 hook? Is 20 cm too long? Maybe 15 cm? Anything shorter than that probably wouldn’t look good, right?
And I’d also like to know how many strands per fringe.

And how many grams of yarn is that roughly?
I still have 3 balls left to crochet, and I’d like to use them to make the fringes. That’s why I’d like to know roughly how much more I can crochet with them.

Are there any approximate figures for this?

Hello Margit,

Unfortunately, there’s no rule of thumb for this.
It always depends on how delicate the pattern is and what you personally find beautiful.

I, for example, prefer “continuous” fringes, meaning one or two strands in each stitch (depending on how thick the yarn is).

Others, on the other hand, prefer fringes in tufts and at regular intervals.

The strands shouldn’t be shorter than 10 cm; 15 cm would probably be the ideal length.

What kind of yarn are you crocheting with?

Maybe first work out how and where you want the fringes. Then measure the total length from the ball of yarn (example: 100 fringes at 30 cm each - always take the length doubled - that makes 3 meters) and carefully place it on a digital kitchen scale. Add a little extra yarn to be on the safe side, and then you’ll know how much you need to allow for the fringes.

I’m assuming that’s a typo… 100 fringes at 30 cm each aren’t 3 meters but 30 meters… you don’t want to end up running out of yarn.

That has already helped me. In the meantime, I’ve also finished the colorful yarn, and the stole has become so large that I’m not adding a border, so I have more than enough left over for the fringe. And as for the length of the fringe, I’ll just have to try it out. It’s a very simple pattern: always 3 double crochets, and 4 at the end. That also makes it a bit thicker and warmer, and I think I’d also like fringe all the way around made with 2–3 strands.
