Carry-along Yarn (not an ad)

Dear users, dear authors,
what is carry-along yarn, and what is it used for?
What kind of yarn do you use for it?
Is it only for crocheting, or also for knitting?

Companion yarn is a thin effect yarn that is knitted or crocheted together with the regular yarn,
Usually it is a glitter or eyelash yarn, but you can also carry along regular sewing thread onto which you have threaded beads. Personally, I find companion yarn prettier when knitting and also easier to work with,

When knitting socks, people used to always knit reinforcement yarn together with the sock yarn at the heel
to reinforce the heel,
but since there are now many different heel patterns—such as the boomerang heel—it’s
hardly ever used anymore!
Socks made without reinforcement yarn are also much more comfortable and last just as long!
