Dear users, dear authors,
what advice do you have for beginners in sewing?

I’m going to keep an eye on this thread and hope for some tips—I’m a complete beginner, and when it comes to sewing, I’m all thumbs :-)

Sewing is just like anything else. Start by looking for a simple sewing project—like a pillow, for example—which you’re sure to find here. There are so many great fabrics out there. Then try another project with a different fabric. The more practice you get, the better you’ll get at it. Handmade items—whether knitted or sewn—are simply much nicer than store-bought ones.

Hi everyone,

First of all, I recommend that beginners start with a simple pattern. Many people find it easiest to begin with woven fabrics—that is, non-stretch fabrics. They don’t shift around as much. Most pattern authors always specify whether a pattern is suitable for beginners. It’s also worth checking out the reviews.

A simple beginner’s project is, for example, a storage basket or a pillow. There are plenty of free patterns for these online, including here on Crazypatterns. You can then move on to more challenging projects, such as small zippered pouches, a book bag, or something similar.

If you want to start with jersey fabric (many people start by sewing for babies), I recommend making a simple pair of harem pants first, and then maybe a simple T-shirt. You’ll start to get a feel for what works for you, and you’ll learn something new with every project.

Have fun sewing!
Sonja

I’m a beginner at sewing, too. A while back, I took a beginner’s sewing machine class. That helped me get to know the machine first. Then, as Sonja already mentioned, I started sewing small projects using woven fabric.

Now, through sewing masks, I’ve discovered how much fun it is. In December, I’m going to become a great-aunt (unfortunately, I don’t have any children of my own), and I’d love to sew something using jersey fabric.
To do that, I want to buy a serger, so I took a class on it last week. I was thrilled!!!

But since I still have a few UFOs lying around, I’ve made a rule for myself to finish those first and then order the new machine. Otherwise, I’ll never get around to my UFOs ;)

Hello everyone,
I would also advise beginners to start with simple projects. In addition, before getting started, you should familiarize yourself with the machine and the different types of fabric. Have fun, dear sewing beginners! Best regards

it’s nice of you to want to help beginners, but please don’t include any links in the posts. Thanks, and have lots more fun here with us.
