Dear users and authors,
someone suggested we have a thread like this, so I’m starting one and asking for your active participation.
The topic is specifying yarn weight in English-language patterns.

Personally, I find the English yarn weight designations quite practical and would like to see something similar in German from time to time.

I’ll list the different yarn weights in ascending order here:

  • Lace, 2-ply = lace yarn, needle size 2–2.5
  • Light fingering, 3-ply = slightly thinner than sock yarn, needle size 2.75–3.5
  • Fingering, 4-ply, sock yarn = classic sock yarn, needle size 3–3.5
  • Sport, 5-ply = slightly thicker than sock yarn, needle size 4–4.5
  • DK, 8-ply = thick sock yarn, needle size 5
  • Aran & worsted, 10-ply = thick yarn for needle sizes 5.5–6
  • Chunky & Bulky = needle size 6–8
  • Super chunky & super bulky = needle sizes 8 and up

Of course, this list can be expanded or corrected.

I think it would be nice (especially for customers) if common yarn types were categorized under the corresponding yarn weights, e.g. Catania by Schachenmayr, probably the best-known yarn for amigurumi (but also for table runners).
I’d leave out the needle sizes, since the gauge has to match the American yarn weights and, for example, Catania isn’t crocheted with a 4 or 4.5 mm hook. So something like this:

  • Lace, 2-ply = lace yarn, needle size 2–2.5
  • Light fingering, 3-ply = a bit thinner than sock yarn, needle size 2.75–3.5
  • Fingering, 4-ply, sock yarn = classic sock yarn, needle size 3–3.5
  • Sport, 5-ply = a bit thicker than sock yarn (e.g. Catania or cotton with 125 m/50 g)
  • DK, 8-ply = thick sock yarn, needle size 5
  • Aran & worsted, 10-ply = thick yarn for needle size 5.5–6
  • Chunky & bulky = needle size 6–8
  • Super chunky & super bulky = from needle size 8 upward

@Schneckenkind
Yes, I think that would be good too. The needle sizes refer to knitting needles; I had forgotten to mention that.
You can add to the list and include some well-known yarns. ;-)

As for common yarn types, I have to say that this varies greatly by region. Someone in America probably wouldn’t think to list Catania as the recommended yarn for their pattern, because it simply isn’t well-known there. And when Americans read in our descriptions that Catania was used, it means just as little to them as when we read “Lion Brand”—just as an example. I still think it makes the most sense to specify yarn thickness—that is, yardage/meterage—in conjunction with the yarn type (cotton) and needle size.
