Hi everyone,

I’ve finished my first pair of slippers and wanted to post a picture of them here, but I don’t know how. I’ve tried everything, but it just isn’t working. I have the picture on my phone now, but I can’t upload it here. Man, I’m so proud of my first creation, and I can’t share it with my friends. :(

Great, Rosi! See, you’re getting the hang of it! Have you tried the gallery here yet? You can easily upload the picture there.

Unfortunately, I don’t know how to upload photos from a phone here, but still: great job! I’m so happy for you!

Hi Rosi,

I’m glad to hear that.

Go to “More” in the top right corner, then to the gallery.
There’s a red, very noticeable “Upload Photo” button. Click on that.
First, you’ll be asked to provide a description of your creation. Further down, you’ll be asked for the image file. When you click there, you can choose the source from which to upload your photo.
If you select the camera, you can take a picture right then and upload it.

Hi, thanks, but I have them on WhatsApp, and I tried to send them from there to my email so I could then attach them here. That’s not working either. I’ll keep looking—maybe it’ll work eventually.

Hello Rosi! 
First of all, it’s great that you managed it. This is how I always upload my pictures to the gallery:
So you go to Gallery, Upload photo.
Then at the bottom it says Image file, then various icons appear, including Camera (as Birgit wrote) and (this is how I do it):
My Files.
Click on it,
Then another selection appears. There I go to picture
Click on it
Then my albums that I created on my phone appear
Choose the album, click on it
Then the photo appears.
Done
If you don’t have any albums on your phone. You can set them up on your phone (on Samsung it’s called Gallery).

Yes, I’m really very happy about it. I’d love to post the knitting pattern here, but I read that you’re only allowed to use it for private purposes and aren’t allowed to share it. I bought it, and I’m not sure whether the rights to it were transferred to me with the purchase. If that’s the case, I’d be happy to post the pattern here. If anyone can tell me, that would be great.
I’m working on a few others at the moment. It’s really fun when you can see that things are working out a bit despite the difficult circumstances. So I’m going to get back to the next pair of slippers now. See you later, everyone.

the slippers turned out really great. Congratulations. I’ve already seen them in the gallery too.

However, if you post the pattern here, you’re breaking the law and could be fined. The copyright to the pattern always belongs to the author.

It’s not allowed to make someone else’s pattern—whether purchased or free—available to others in any way (not even in Facebook or WhatsApp groups). This doesn’t even need to be explicitly stated in the pattern. It’s also not allowed to recreate the pattern and pass it off as your own. That too is a criminal offense.

While a lot is done online these days, not everything is permitted. And some authors, rightly so, do take action against this and involve lawyers accordingly.

I thought as much, which is why I wrote it that way. Of course, I’ll keep the pattern to myself—once I’ve bought it, it’s mine. It’s just a shame that you’re not allowed to pass it on to someone else for free. On the other hand, I also understand the author—it takes many hours and a lot of effort to create a pattern. I’m just happy that they turned out so great—I’m already working on the next pair. :) :) :)

But honestly, if you share a purchased pattern for free, the author loses out on profit. And you wouldn’t be the only one doing that. So the author suffers a loss. And personally, I’d rather do something else than invest my time in writing patterns. Others would do the same. And then there would be significantly fewer patterns.

Imagine, for example, that you’re writing a book (sorry, I can’t think of a better example right now). You’ve spent hours, weeks, and months writing it, and you’ve bought supplies—like paper (pattern writers have to buy yarn, etc.)—and so on. Then you sell the book to someone for a few euros. That person simply copies the book and gives it away to everyone else, so that no one else buys the book from you anymore. But you still have to pay taxes on your sales, file a tax return, pay your tax advisor, register a business (well, you don’t have to do that when writing a book, but a pattern writer definitely might, depending on their business model), pay the Chamber of Crafts, pay for advertising, pay the platform, and so on and so forth.

Would you write another book, or would you just give it up? And that’s exactly how it is for pattern writers. Why would anyone go through all this if they don’t get anything in return? In that time, you could easily pursue other activities. Like lounging on the couch, for example :-D

I just wanted to make it clear that everything is a bit of give and take. Everyone who writes and sells patterns here does it largely out of a love for the work—for the joy of crocheting, knitting, crafting, etc.—out of a love for creativity, for the joy of creating something new, and for the fun of interacting with fellow crafters, etc. But at the end of the day, you should at least be able to recoup your costs, and to be honest, some people here really do rely on the income from pattern sales.

No, that’s not what I meant—you’re right, so I can’t and won’t share the pattern. I don’t want the writer/author to suffer any harm. So don’t worry—it will remain my pattern and no one else’s.

I totally agree with MyBatzi—that’s exactly how I see it, too.
However, I have an idea—or rather, a question—for Josefa:
How about posting the link to the pattern here (if it’s been uploaded to CP)?
That would help everyone, especially the author of the pattern.
I’m sure there are quite a few people who’d be interested.

Hi, I’d love to tell you the website where I bought the pattern. I’d posted it here before, but unfortunately it was deleted with a note saying not to post ADVERTISEMENTS here—it wasn’t advertising, just the site where I bought the pattern. If I get the go-ahead, I’ll be happy to post it here, so you can buy the pattern and make it yourselves if you’d like. But I’ll only do that if I get EXPRESS PERMISSION to post it here—I don’t want to do anything wrong.

Please do not exchange or share pattern files. That’s not okay.
When you buy a pattern, you are only buying the right to open it, read it, work from it, etc. The ownership and copyright remain with the author.

Authors may only promote their patterns in the promotional threads I’ve created.

No, I’m not doing that either—that’s why I clearly stated that I’ll only publish a pattern page once I get your EXPLICIT OK; otherwise, I can’t publish anything. You only need to tell me once, then I don’t need a second reminder. I may have a problem in my head, but I’m still clear enough.
