Sock yarns made from sheep’s wool/Merino or alpaca are especially
temperature-regulating, so they are comfortable to wear both in winter and in summer.
This is an illustrated
sock-knitting course using baby socks size 15,
knitted from 4-ply sock yarn, and
consists of a total of 4 PDF files:
- main PDF pattern with lots of photos,
- handwritten sketches,
- baby sock chart for sizes 15 - 20
- and a sock chart for sizes 22 - 47.
There is also a
brief baby mitten pattern included, since parts of the baby sock pattern can be used for it.
Don’t be alarmed! It is harder to describe the process than to knit the socks.
Materials needed: approx. 15 g 4-ply sock yarn for the baby socks, approx. 10 g 4-ply sock yarn for the baby mittens, for adult socks up to size 44: 100 g sock yarn; if larger, 150 g is required. Set of double-pointed needles 2.5, measuring tape, scissors, yarn needle.
The baby socks can also be embroidered, for example, and used in various ways—not just as baby socks—e.g. as “packaging” for cash gifts or sweets, as an Advent calendar, as a keychain (scaled down proportionally, it looks prettier), etc.

Sweet preemie socks for a total foot length from 4.5 cm can also be used as doll socks or a keychain or as gift wrapping for money, or to decorate an Easter branch or Christmas tree—the sky’s the limit..
The pattern, together with the sock chart, can be used for additional sock sizes up to shoe size 20.
The download includes 4 files:
- PDF preemie sock chart up to size 20 for baby socks
- PDF pattern for the individual preemie socks, 4.5 cm to 7.5 cm total foot length (23 pages incl. pictures)
- PDF pattern with detailed photos for the principle (using newborn socks—17 pages)
- PDF handwritten sketches (using a newborn sock—2 pages)
General knitting skills (as well as knitting stitches together) are sufficient.
Required
materials for 1 pair of socks up to newborn size: approx. 10 g 4-ply sock yarn, or leftover yarn. We also need a set of double-pointed needles size 2.5, measuring tape, scissors, yarn needle for weaving in ends, and, if desired, a key ring.

For baby socks made from slightly thicker yarn:

For baby feet (as long as the little ones are not walking yet), soft Merino yarns with a similar yardage to 6-ply sock yarn (50 g - 125 m) are also suitable.
Socks made from 6-ply sock yarn (usually 150 g - approx. 375 m) are a little thicker—and therefore also warmer—and, above all, quicker to knit than socks made from 4-ply yarn. Adults usually prefer them as house and bed socks, hut slippers, or for hiking in mountain boots. Men love socks like these in work shoes.
This is basically a sock-knitting course, illustrated in detail using children’s socks size 32/33.
All other sizes can be knitted
according to the corresponding chart information for 6-ply sock yarn.
Included in the
download :
- PDF sock-knitting pattern - illustrated step by step (22 pages)
- Baby sock chart for 6-ply sock yarn for newborns up to shoe size 20
- Sock chart for 6-ply sock yarn, children’s socks up to adult shoe size 47
We need
- approx. 30 g for baby socks
- approx. 100 g for children’s socks up to size 35
- for adults:
1 ball = 150 g (yardage approx. 420 m to 450 m) up to shoe size 44; 200 g – 250 g from size 45
of a 6-ply sock yarn,
here the especially soft sock yarn “Mally Socks – Lungauer Sockenwolle” by Ferner Wolle was used, 75% Merino, 25% polyamide; gauge approx. 22 sts x 31 rows = 10 cm x 10 cm; set of double-pointed needles 3.5; row counter is helpful; measuring tape, scissors, yarn needle for weaving in ends.
