Is 100% acrylic yarn always unpleasant?

Hi everyone
I was shopping at the supermarket today and there was this big basket of yarn.
Unfortunately, it was just itchy virgin wool and 100% acrylic.
I actually like yarn with some acrylic in it, but 100% is really too much.
It’s scratchy and squeaks when I work with it, and the fibers get everywhere—and if I work with it for too long, it makes me itchy. And I have the impression—subjectively speaking—that the yarn strips the natural oils from the skin on my hands. But I should mention that I have sensitive skin anyway.

Am I the only one who can’t stand 100% acrylic?
It would be convenient, because acrylic yarn is available pretty much everywhere—and in all sorts of pretty colors, too. If you want something different here in my area, you have to go out of your way to a specialty store.
If they have so much of that acrylic yarn there—and not just once, but every time I’m there—then someone must be buying it.

When I see how much of this yarn seems to be sold, surely others can’t think it’s as bad as I do?
Do you get used to acrylic yarn if you’ve been working with it for ages?

I’d love to hear what anyone has to say about this.

Hi muetzekatze

So you’d also like to get used to acrylic yarn because it’s easier to get and the trip to the specialty store is too far?
Personally, I don’t have any major issues with acrylic yarn. It works quite well for decorative projects.
Would this be a compromise for you: making decorative items with acrylic yarn and using cotton or another blend for clothing?
However, I can’t tell you whether that would be compatible with your itchiness.

Sidney
