Arm knitting—no needles required

There are quite a few people here in the forum who’d like to learn to knit but can’t get the hang of using all those needles. Arm knitting might be the solution for you—you don’t need any needles at all, just both hands.
Of course, the yarn needs to be a bit thicker.
But it looks really good when it’s finished, and it’s quick to make.

I just checked how much a ball of yarn for arm knitting costs
—20 euros. That’s a steep price.
But at least that’s enough for a whole scarf, as far as I can tell.

But back to the topic: I think arm knitting/finger crocheting is cool (except for the cowl—I’m totally with you on that). Thanks for the video
I’ll give it a try with yarn that isn’t quite so thick. Finger crocheting should work with medium-weight yarn too.

Sure, I can do that—have a nice little conversation with myself all on my own.
I’ve had plenty of practice with that. ;) I do it while shopping and while doing handicrafts, too. I always tell myself what I’m going to take off the shelf next or what I’m going to do next. But only under my breath—you don’t want to annoy people.

Finger crocheting also works with yarn that isn’t quite so thick, that’s true.

I already looked at this thread a while ago, and then I wanted to reply so Clara wouldn’t always have to talk to herself. But I forgot. Now I’m doing it. :)

I can easily imagine finger crocheting and finger knitting with really thick yarn. With medium-weight yarn, though, I’d personally rather use the appropriate needles.

That way, you could finish an entire blanket in a reasonable amount of time. Unless, of course, you’d rather crochet a small piece onto it every day; then the extra-thick yarn and using your arms would be rather counterproductive.
For a whole blanket, you’d naturally need several balls of that thick yarn, so it certainly would cost something. But you’d need quite a few of the smaller balls of yarn for a blanket too. So it probably doesn’t really make much difference.
When you consider that you can get cozy soft blankets in the store for 10 euros or so, that’s quite a significant price difference.
But anyone can buy. Making it yourself is much nicer. And you don’t take up knitting and crocheting as a hobby to save money, but because it’s fun. :)

I was browsing through old posts again and dug this one up.
And there are still a few questions from Sundown that I’d overlooked.
Where has Sundown actually gone? She always posted nice things, and then suddenly she stopped coming to the forum altogether. Well, maybe she’ll come back someday. :)

So, yeah, about the blanket—I’d actually been working on that. I actually wanted to make a whole blanket myself—first make lots of individual granny squares and then sew them together.

But I haven’t gotten that far yet. In the meantime, though, I’ve tried crocheting with a really thick crochet hook—an 8 or a 9, I think. It works surprisingly well.
I haven’t tried finger crocheting or arm crocheting—or finger knitting or arm knitting, for that matter—lately, but maybe I’ll give finger crocheting another shot, and especially finger knitting or arm knitting. With real knitting, there are just way too many needles for me. When knitting socks, you need four or so, even though I’ve read that there are techniques where you only need two. I think that was a pattern by Nici from Sternenwelt.
But anything that involves more than one needle is too much for me. ;)
I’ll have to see what I can find on that. The problem is, though, that I don’t have any nice yarn right now. Once the Christmas break rolls around, I’ll look for something pretty.

And as Sundown also writes, you can buy blankets cheaply, but making them yourself is something else entirely.
I’m not entirely sure if you could make an entire blanket using arm crocheting or finger knitting. I’ll have to check it all out again on YouTube, but I don’t think there are any patterns for finger crocheting, arm crocheting, finger knitting, or arm knitting in the shop here on CP, are there?

hello, I wanted to make my boyfriend a mezzo blanket for Christmas, one with that thick yarn, or a cushion, also made from the thick yarn. Now I wanted to ask: on the Ohhio site you can only buy skeins by the meter, so I would have three questions:
1. how many meters are in one skein
2. how many meters do I need for a 1.80 by 1.20 m blanket, or larger
3. how much yarn do I need for a cushion
