What’s the difference between “wolle” and “garn”?

I've never really understood when to say "wolle" and when to say "garn."
I mean, there's also "sewing thread" (Nähgarn), so I always thought "garn" was a thinner thread, and when the thread gets a little thicker, you call it "wolle"?
Is that right?
