Maybe it would help to know how old the child is.
I don't find ursulapetra's sweater vests old-fashioned, and I'm still young myself (or at least that's what I claim ;) )
You can always change the colors if you don't like them, but in the end the cut of a sweater vest is always the same. Maybe you can find a sweater pattern you like and just leave out the sleeves? 

No, they’re not old-fashioned—maybe I didn’t express myself clearly. I’m the one who’s old-fashioned (73); the young man is 7 years old. But you’re right—I’ll look for a sweater pattern and leave out the sleeves. Thanks a million.
