Where can I buy colorful yarn?

Hi everyone,

first of all, Merry Christmas to everyone who’s celebrating or has already celebrated!

I’ll just come right out and say I’m a newbie—I’ve only finished three scarves so far, and I’m now back in the planning phase for scarf No. 4. And now I’m completely confused about where to get a wide variety of colors. My current plan would require at least 8 (solid) colors for the pattern, possibly more. And since I’m basing this on a specific image, these colors should match my reference as closely as possible.

Do you have any tips on where I can get yarn in a wide variety of colors? So far, a set from Wollfactory comes closest—except for the green. And since I want to try this pattern, I’d really like to have the perfect colors—otherwise, I’d be frustrated forever.
Are there any websites where you can search by color? Or general color charts so I don’t have to click through what feels like thousands of different yarns just to finally find all the matching colors somewhere?

Thanks so much for your help!
Sam

Hi,

If you’re looking for merino or a merino blend, as far as I know, Lana Grossa always has a color chart available, and you can also check it out in person at many stores.

For cotton, I highly recommend Catania. They also have a huge selection of colors.

Hi!
Jorun’s Botany Merino yarn comes in about 180 colors and is perfect for multicolor knitting! The individual colors are also available in 25-g skeins, which is handy, especially if you don’t need that much of a particular color. You can get the yarn here, for example:

Good luck!

Thanks for the tip!
I hadn’t heard of that manufacturer before. :)

I’d also say it always depends on what material you want to use. However, if you’re self-employed, you can request color charts from quite a few manufacturers.

Thanks, guys—I hadn’t really thought about the material until now. So far, I’ve only ever used the yarn packs from the supermarket without giving it much thought. I’ve already saved the links! It’ll just take a little longer now ;)

Hi Sam,

I now mainly buy hand-dyed natural wool—that is, pure cotton, merino, alpaca, etc.

For one thing, hand-dyeing allows for an almost infinite number of color variations and combinations, and because it is plant-dyed, there aren’t as many chemicals on or in the wool.

If you’re interested, I’d be happy to send you a message with the suppliers I use.

As for the properties of the different types of wool, I can recommend this post here on crazypatterns:

Best regards,
