Technical question: How do you knit a yarn over twice on the wrong side?

Hi,
I have a pattern for a lace pattern by Junghans (Model 123/2, square shawl made from Merino 400 Lace by LANG Yarns).

In the knitting chart, there’s a symbol/instruction I don’t understand: 1 U, on the WS work 1 knit + 1 purl into it.
So I make a yarn over on the RS, and then on the WS…?? Does that mean the yarn over is worked twice? I’m having trouble managing the working yarn.
Does anyone understand this and can explain it to me in a way that’s easy enough for a total beginner?

maybe this is what it means: on the wrong side row, knit the yarn over and purl the next stitch. I'm not sure, and I’d be happy if you let me know whether that’s right :-). If needed, try knitting a 5x5 cm rectangle to test out this pattern.

That’s how I’d understand it: On the wrong side row, you work two stitches into the yarn over: 1 knit stitch, 1 purl stitch.

That is exactly how it is knitted when it says:  1 YO, on the wrong side 1x knit + 1x purl off.
Written out in full, it means:
On the right side row, slip 1 yarn over; on the wrong side row, knit 2 stitches out of the yarn over.
That means, knit 1 stitch, leave the yarn over on the left needle (do not slip it off), then purl one more stitch from it. =  2 stitches.
I used the same pattern in my slipover.

I see it the same way: on the WS, the yarn over becomes 2 stitches, 1 knit and 1 purl.
@ moniswolle, the slipover you knitted is BRILLIANT. :-)
