☞ Question of the Week: How do you give an amigurumi a “lifelike” face?

Dear users, dear authors,
of course an amigurumi (= a cute little animal or creature with a big head and relatively small limbs) can’t really look lifelike, but you can definitely give it a pretty face with an expressive look.
How do you do that? Do you have any tips, even for beginners?

Personally, I think eyelashes—either embroidered with sewing thread or using “real” doll eyelashes—are important on a doll if you use safety eyes. They give the eyes a more open and radiant look. Or you can place a small piece of white felt under the eyes; that also makes the eyes look very funny.
The eyes should be attached in such a way that you get the feeling the doll is looking at you, so not too far apart.

Cheeks lightly colored with blush are also a lovely detail and make a doll look more lively.

Another tip is eyebrows—embroidered at a slight angle, they give teddy bears, for example, a sweet/sad look that makes you just want to cuddle them!

The mouth should smile as cutely as possible; that can take a bit of practice. Even I need several tries before the doll smiles exactly the way I want it to.

Those are my little tricks. Of course, there are also many people who prefer it when there are simply just 2 eyes on the face and nothing else.

The best thing is to just try it out....;-)

As the previous poster already mentioned, you can do a lot with embroidery. However, I prefer to paint the eyes and mouth onto the fabric when I’m making figures for myself. When I’m making something for my godchildren, I use safety eyes and embroider the rest.

Above all, it takes calm and patience—you should be prepared to remove and reattach the eyes several times until they’re just right. Pins with black heads or test eyes for teddy bears are very helpful.
As for the mouth: Some animals and dolls call for a smile, but there’s also the other “school” of thought. From an educational perspective, many experts believe it’s better for the animal or doll to have a neutral facial expression—children project their own moods onto the animal or doll. They confide their worries and troubles to them, and a broad grin can definitely be distracting in that context.

If the eyes are set a little deeper, they usually look even more lifelike, and chubby cheeks often work well, too. You can achieve this effect by pulling the threads tight. And as mentioned before, eyebrows make a big difference.
The key is to take your time, stay calm, and have a lot of patience.

I’m not particularly fond of safety eyes. To me, they’re so stiff and lifeless. I always feel like dolls with safety eyes have a kind of dead expression. I prefer to embroider the eyes. These days, I use a very thin thread. For the mouth, I usually just embroider a round dot. I use pins to test out the placement of the eyes and mouth. And yes, you have to practice a lot and rip things out until everything turns out the way you imagine it!
