Jersey Fabric (Not an Advertising Thread)

Many of the patterns here on Crazypatterns use jersey fabric. Not everyone here may know what that is or how to work with it effectively. If anyone has any information on this, please post it here.

I’m bumping this thread again—maybe someone else would like to add something.

Jersey is a stretchy fabric that’s mainly used for tops, hats, lightweight skirts and pants, and baby/children’s clothing.
Cotton jersey is typically used. These fabrics usually consist of a high percentage of cotton (e.g., 95–97%) and a small percentage of spandex (e.g., 3–5%).
There is also 100% cotton jersey, which is slightly stretchy due to a special finishing process.
The higher the spandex content, the more stretchy the fabric. The more stretchy the fabric, the more “slippery” it feels when working with it.
Beginners should “practice” with a lower spandex content.
You should also always sew with special jersey needles that have a rounded tip; otherwise, holes will form.
Additionally, you should sew using an elastic stitch (such as a zigzag stitch, for example, if your machine doesn’t have a special jersey stitch).
