The pattern

Hi, everyone! I have to tell you something, and you’re going to laugh, but for a moment last night, I really wasn’t in the mood to laugh.

It started off innocently enough, as always. 11 p.m., me and my needle-felted hedgehog, row by row, stitch by stitch. That sound when the needle goes through the wool. Always the same. Soothing...

I was felting and felting, and suddenly I was on step 14—even though the pattern only has 12 steps. I flipped back, and there was step 13, printed just fine. Step 14... And the hedgehog on my table had two eyes, even though I’d only made one. I wanted to reopen the PDF pattern, but my hands were... well, suddenly I couldn’t do anything at all.

I woke up at half past two on the sofa, the needle still in my hand (luckily not in my finger), and the hedgehog was lying peacefully next to me with its one eye, looking just as harmless as before. Still, I put him on the shelf for now. Facing the wall. Better safe than sorry.

Now I’m wondering what my mind is trying to tell me with this… too many projects? Did I start felting too late?

You’re right, I had to laugh. I’m more used to this happening with books, and depending on where I’m sitting, I wake up when they crash to the floor.

The hedgehog isn’t to blame. Your creative imagination is simply racing ahead of your hands. That’s perfectly normal. The brain is so intensely focused on it that it keeps going on its own, even when we doze off. That shouldn’t worry you.

I know that feeling, too—it’s especially easy to do needlework at night. Everything is so quiet, and the steady movements and sounds help you get into that famous “flow.” And then you just drift along, not noticing how late it’s gotten. If you can sleep in the next day or don’t mind walking around overtired, you can keep going like that.

But I also tend to favor Regina’s method. Just save some work for tomorrow! Set your craft aside after reaching a key point, while you’re still awake enough. Then you’ll be on the safe side. After that, go to bed and read for another hour or so. That way, you can distract your creative mind and wind it down.

We’re all curious about the hedgehog now :-)

I’d like to add something else: Most of the time, I sit in front of my computer screen watching TV shows that interest me, because the TV schedule has been full of reruns lately—and I don’t want to watch them what feels like a hundred times. Right now, there’s a lot of sports on—not really my thing either. Yeah, and while I’m watching shows, I just do some needlework on the side. Then when I’m done, I turn off the computer 💻, sit down, and unwind with a book 📖 in my hand—like Ina already said—and read a little, maybe in bed 🛏️. That relaxes me—at least it does me—so much and makes me sleepy. 🥱

For me, knitting is so relaxing that I regularly doze off. And I wake up when my hand slips slightly.... But usually it takes the needle with it, and then I have to pick up the stitches again. It’s great when I’m knitting a sock heel—those double stitches are rarely recovered without damage. Then I have to unravel the heel and start over from the beginning. 

But.... Maybe you brought the hedgehog to life. Maybe he wants to watch over you. 

Yes, now I want to see that hedgehog too. 🤩😅
