What will you do when the heat wave is over? Do you have plans for cooler days?

Dear community,

when the temperatures finally drop below 86 degrees again, what will you do then? Do you have plans you’d like to put into action? Craft projects that it’s too hot for right now? Everyday projects you’d like to tackle? I hope you have lots of fun. 

Take a deep breath, breathe a sigh of relief, and above all, open the windows to let some fresh air in. It’s pretty unpleasant in Cologne right now. But as far as crafts go, I don’t have any specific plans at the moment. Once I finish one project, I’ll decide on the next one—I’m not planning on tackling anything big right now.

I definitely need to get the garden back in shape. During the heat, I didn’t do anything in the garden except water it with the hose and use the sprinkler.

Then it’s time to clean (unfortunately, our Superolga left us after over a year because she found a permanent job). Lately, I’ve sometimes been cleaning as late as midnight.

I’m looking forward to next week. The temperatures here are going to drop then. Right now, the weather app is forecasting around 25 degrees. That already seems very pleasant to me compared to today.

Once this heat wave is over, I’ll be able to breathe properly again and, above all, keep my head dry throughout the day. After showering and washing my hair, I can skip blow-drying it, because five minutes later my hair is just as wet as if I’d just stepped out of the shower :-((. I need up to three towels around my neck so the water dripping from my hair doesn’t keep running down my spine; it’s not exactly pleasant. I’m looking forward to the temperatures going down again.

I’m also looking forward to next week. Then it’s off to the garden to continue building the tortoise enclosure and to hoe through my garden beds. 

I’d like to do some sewing—I already have the batting ready for new hedgehog houses. 

But wow—it’s supposed to drop from 38 degrees to 24 degrees. Everything always happens so suddenly; the body has to adjust first.

Hedgehog shelters are little caves where hedgehogs can take shelter, hide, or curl up. They’re for sick hedgehogs or those in rehabilitation centers.

Hopefully it’ll cool down soon so we can breathe a sigh of relief and air out the place again. Right now, it’s a whopping 31 degrees in the apartment. This isn’t fun anymore.

Squirrel nests are being made

Here, we’re currently enjoying the long-awaited rain and a pleasant 23.8 degrees. 

It’s still 25 degrees inside, with all the windows and doors open

I know that squirrel nests are for squirrels. I just mentioned it because you’re both working on wildlife conservation there, which I think is great! ♡ 

Yep, here too—30 minutes of rain, 22.3 degrees—wonderful! 

Inside, unfortunately, it’s 27. 

I’m looking forward to more comfortable temperatures in the kitchen, since I’d love to bake some bread and a yeast plait again. Right now, I don’t want to raise the indoor temperature even more with the oven. Although it rained here in the Rhine-Main region last night and cooled down a bit, it’s become very humid.

It’ll probably take a while for the heat to clear out of the house despite the draft—likely right up until the next heat wave. It was 32 degrees in the bedroom; we’ve slept very well the last two nights in the basement office on guest mattresses.

Those who have a basement are lucky! 

I still have to mix up some bread dough today; it’ll sit in the fridge overnight and be baked tomorrow—despite the heat, since we’re having guests and the grandkids love homemade bread.

A cool-down? Well, we didn’t really get one. This morning at 6:15 a.m., there was a thunderstorm—lightning and thunder at the same time—followed by a brief downpour, and that was it. Right now it’s already 29° again, a bit cloudy with some sun; and here in the apartment, it’s not cooling down (30.7° in the living room), despite the draft. So the fan can’t go on vacation just yet. 

Oh, and I’ve already done a little crafting—a pencil holder for each of my grandchildren (a pair of twins).

And a toilet roll cover for our beekeeper, from whom we always get honey.

I hope for the next heat wave <3

It’s very pleasant outside today at 23° with light cloud cover. Unfortunately, the next heat wave is already on its way—according to the weather forecasts ;-)

Since we have guests right now—until next Tuesday—and are heading off to a vacation rental ourselves on Wednesday, I went ahead and bought something today to keep me busy during our short getaway. 

I’m not sure yet what I’ll make from it—it’s 600 grams in total, with 200-gram skeins. If it isn’t scratchy, maybe something very airy, since it’s polyester—I have no idea. Do you have any suggestions?

Finally time to breathe a sigh of relief—everything has aired out. It’s a pleasant 17 degrees outside, and the room temperature is 24 degrees. That makes crafting and DIY fun again. It’s raining right now.

Right now I’m making cards, crocheting little things here and there, and continuing to crochet my jacket (I have this huge ball of yarn for it). The pattern is from here. I’ll have to check again which shop it was from.
