What do you use sock yarn / leftover sock yarn for?

Dear community,
apart from socks, what do you use sock yarn / leftover sock yarn for?

 

I’m currently knitting sweaters for my 3 dolls out of sock yarn. Steffi is already wearing hers, the one for Rika is on my needles right now :-) and the one for Lilly is in the pipeline. There will be matching little pants to go with them, too

I combine several strands to make thick, warm hats or scarves.

I like to crochet large blankets with it; this one here measures about 1.55 x 1.90.
Because the yarn is so thin, they still fit easily in the washing machine and are still nice and warm.

I’ve also knitted wrist warmers from sock yarn. However, my sock yarn was 6-ply, so a bit thicker

 


And this blanket was also made from sock yarn—with angora in it

 

I think you can knit just about anything with sock yarn, as long as the thickness and—if necessary—the material are suitable. But these days there’s also cotton sock yarn, or yarn with cashmere. I could even imagine knitting a shawl out of that 

Sock yarn is also great for knitting doll clothes. You don’t need much, so you can use up even the tiniest scraps. 

I’m currently working on a shawl made from scraps and am curious to see if it feels itchy.

(“Currently” is unfortunately a bit of a misnomer. I started it, and three other projects were also interesting. Now I don’t understand the knitting pattern anymore, and I’m too tired in the evenings to figure it all out. I’m hoping for the Christmas break.)

I knit little hats for Innocent’s charity project—I think that’s a great way to use up leftover sock yarn! I’ve been doing this for a few years now; the campaign always takes place before Christmas.

I’m currently using my leftover yarn to make Japanese-style gloves.
