Does yarn ever just break while knitting or crocheting?

does the yarn ever break in the middle of crafting, or does that happen to you rather rarely?

not really.

The one time it happened to me while crocheting, it was a defect in the yarn.
That is, the yarn was very thin at that spot.

Other than that, it doesn’t really happen to me.

It hasn’t happened to me yet while crocheting or knitting, but it has happened while weaving in ends.

It can happen, especially if the yarn is already quite old. I’ve had it happen too; then you just knit in the ends and that’s that.

Actually, no, unless it’s very old—but you can tell when that happens, and then you just join a new strand and weave in the ends.

I once had some yarn—it was pure new wool—that literally fell apart while I was knitting. It was probably old, and according to my neighbor, who gave it to me, it had been sitting in the light for quite some time. She always meant to bring it over, but you know how it goes. And so it ended up sitting in the sun more or less all summer.
 I threw that yarn away. It was just a few meters at most, and I was worried that it would keep falling apart while I was knitting and even in the finished piece. That would have been a waste of effort.

This can happen with unplied wool/plied yarns, for example with roving yarn.
