Dear users, dear authors,
is velvet yarn the same as chenille yarn? Are both suitable only for crocheting, or also for knitting?

I recently knitted a teddy bear and a pillow with chenille yarn, and both turned out great :-))

With these pom-pom yarns, I always find knitting easier than crocheting.

When it comes to fabrics, there is a distinction between velvet and chenille. I think velvet has a shorter pile than chenille, but perhaps the fabric experts can say more about that.

When it comes to yarns, I think chenille yarn is the same as velvet yarn.

Chenille yarn is generally easier to knit with than to crochet with. Beginners, in particular, often have problems when crocheting.  It starts with the magic ring, which is difficult or impossible to pull tight. Solution: Start with 2 ch and crochet into the starting chain stitch to form the magic ring.
Then (especially with dark yarn) it can be hard to see the stitches.  The only solution is practice and good lighting.
You also tend to crochet too loosely with chenille yarn because the yarn doesn’t slide through tight stitches as well. But that’s particularly problematic with amigurumi, because they won’t hold their shape.
And finally, chenille yarn is very difficult to unravel. The yarn usually breaks in the process.
That’s why, when I design my own amigurumi, I usually crochet the first one with cotton before moving on to one made with chenille.

For this reason, chenille yarn isn’t recommended for beginners. However, since the little animals turn out wonderfully soft and cuddly with this yarn, you shouldn’t give up—after some practice, feel free to give this yarn a try.
